Chief Wiggum

That's what I once told a NJ state trooper who stopped me on the interstate and his first words were, "What's your hurry, pilgrim?" I said, "I'm TRYING to get to work!" He let me go with a warning to slow down.

Well, it was a long time ago. ;)

It's hard to fault someone that's in a hurry to get to work.

In the late 60s I had proudly bought my first VW, and it was laboring heavily to top a hill with my 3 buddies going north to visit a friend at another campus.

The daytime speed was 65 and the night speed statewide was "55". We had been in the car most of the day and rarely touched '65' and twilight had come upon us.

At the top of the hill we barely labored over and started downhill easing up into the '65' range while being passed by everyone.

The patrolman was uninterested in my protestations as a obvious high-speed rig went by at probably 80+....when I pointed that one out he said something to the effect of "you're the only one I could catch up with"...

I think he was making a joke....and I had an 8 mph over ticket to pay.

Got my first speeding ticket 2 years ago, after 12 years of driving. Was following a State Trooper on highway. No lights or sirens on, after a couple miles he slams on the brakes and swerves into right lane. I try to pull in behind him, but he kept breaking, seeing there was no hazard in the left lane I pulled back out around him. He throws the light on and pulls me over. Get the standard question, "Do you know why I pulled you over?" Was upset by his foolish break stunt, and said "Cause I was going the same speed you were." Which he replied I was going 1 mph faster, and that he was going 86 and I was going 87--remember I was following at safe distance--cause I clearer didn't run into him when he slammed on his brakes. He takes my information, goes to his car, and comes back hands me a ticket--doesn't have me sign it. Tells me I should be more careful with my family in the car, and heads back to his. I lean out my window and ask him if I can ask him a question, he shouts out "NO" and gets in his car. Look at the ticket and he also wrote me up for "Following too closely."

Lessons learned:

1. State Troopers can go whatever speed they feel like without sirens or lights.

2. My families safety determined solely by my driving, not the officer doing 21 mph over the posted speed-limit without sirens or lights.

I have friends that are Police Officers and respect the job they do, so this was just a sole case where I was in complete disagreement by the acts of an officer. I know I was not following the posted speed limit, and paid my fine.
