As it usually happens, deals happen when you’re not looking.
Came across a CHP4006 “parts gun” on the big board. Looked complete with a mag, except for the missing spring decocker. Frame, slide and barrel all had matching numbers.
Put in a bid, figured no way am I gonna win this one. Someone will bid it up.
Wrong! Winner winner!
Needs a thorough cleaning and it’s already mostly apart.
Grips have the shadow of the frame number on the inside. What I thought was a scratch turns out to be a micro engraved serial number.
Already got the spring decocker from Numrich. Plunger and spring were in the parts bin. Right side ambi came with it.
Couple of questions.
Was this model ever offered with night sights?
I have a set of dead Trijicons from a 5906 to be relamped, would they fit?
Any idea on the manufacture date? CHP26XX
Anyone know production numbers for the CHP4006?

The dovetails are the same so they would "fit" but the front sight blade on the SA15's made for the 40s is taller than the SA07's made for the 9s so POI would be higher.

It was not offered with night Sights. The 5906 sights should fit, same dovetail cut. Your gun was probably made in jan.07.man.code is 149545

Fun project for you.

Of course I had to look it up to see what your final price was. You did good even with having to source a decocker. It’s amazing all the parts stayed together and that someone cared enough to make sure they did.

The total production number floated around here a few years ago was 9891.

As a side note I saw some recent closed auctions for the 4006TSWCHP’s. Prices sure have increased since they first started becoming available.

Slide shows minimal holster wear at the front sight, otherwise I’d call it very good condition.

I also snagged one of these for a great deal from the same source, sans barrel. Im working to have it converted to 9 with a Briley Bushing swapped in over the pressed bushing, something Heymatt and I have discussed a bit. Should make for a neat suppressor host

FYI for anyone needing them, the spring loaded decocker bodies are available (albeit in Stainless) from one of the usual sources

Sorry, grand total ordered was 9831

Got it put together for the most part. Just got get round to bluing the decocker.
Found the disconnector tip was broken off. Grabbed a spare out of the bin and together it went.

So, it was a good frame? They sold the gun in pieces? Usually when I see parts gun, the frame isn't included.

Rosewood

Frame is in great shape. From what I can tell, based on what was included is. The spring on the decocker broke, (broken spring in the bag) and the disconnector was broken. It got taken apart and just never got repaired. Under the rear sight and behind the extractor, was packed with filth! So it was carried and definitely used. Fortunately they kept the remaining parts together.

I have the same thing on my PC 952-1. It’s really odd… guns before it do not have this. Guns after it do not have this. It appears to be something that S&W was toying with.

Not sure I get it. The SN is obvious on the side of the pistol. If you are some nefarious character, maybe you don’t realize that it is also under the one-piece grip in double the physical size. But then wait, it’s micro-engraved also?

And if you were some nefarious character, if you did find the huge one under the grip, would you not notice the teeny tiny one that S&W chose to engrave literally millimeters away from the huge one?

Yeah, I definitely don’t understand it. And the evidence might suggest that S&W (eventually) didn’t think it made much sense either.

For a hot minute I thought maybe it was a Performance Center thing. However I have a number of PC guns and the 952-1 is the only one with this micro serial number on it.

For anyone curious, you can see it in the OP’s attached picture.

If you draw a line to the right from the traditional SN location and you draw a line up from the large font SN on the frame hidden by the grip, that little scratch you see where the lines (basically) intersect is this micro-engraved SN.

The one I received from the same source is also in great condition, but also had the tip of the FP safety lever break off, and actually seized up the slide while assembled. Stripped it down and replaced with a fresh lever, good as new. Interesting that they both had similar uncommon failures, albeit different levers

Here it is at 10x magnification on my phone.
I could probably cover it with a grain of rice:)

There were great deals on these when California Highway Patrol cashed theirs in a few years back, I was lucky to pick up an unissued NIB. I found it, like most third gens, to be a robust and accurate design. Nice that you had the part. May it serve you well.

Mine is my bedside gun. My best buddy, Wayne Mulholland, was a retired CHiP and I always feel like he is still around keeping watch. (He retired before the .40's were issued and carried a .357 Python, but still it's my reminder of a great guy.)

Something I noticed when I was detail stripping this one. There is a third plunger under the rear sight. It looks like it goes down into the decocker space.
Anyone know what this one does?

Redundancy.

In the event the decocker only spring around the manual safety body fails, the plunger under the rear sight will hold the safety body in place instead of flopping around.
