We are days away from the emergence and the Ohio Valley is expecting gazillions. I witnessed the last three Brood X visits and no one slept or could avoid them. They will definitely sneak into the house as I have three youngins here that can't close doors and having nine cats, I can pretty much write the drapes and blinds off.

JR and Logan have never experienced them so this ought to be good. (whiffle bats at the ready)

Got to experience a cicada brood emergence about 10 years ago. Not a pleasant experience. Constantly brushing them off me. Clouds of them everywhere. It was like driving in a hail storm. There was one local candy shop that was catching them and serving them dipped in chocolate. Ick. :eek:
 
This is what gets rid of them. They start out as a white grub worm and live in the ground for years. These are in my area. I though they were here years ago but the dr. told me my ears were ringing.:)

When we would go deer hunting, my brother would bring his wall tent. We would hunt on the dry side of the state. In mountain/forested areas but very near the high desert country. We have a beetle here, about the size of a Whopper malted milk ball. During the dry they bury themselves in the ground and when it rains they come up out of the ground to do their business. But it must be the vibrations from the raindrops that trigger the response and not moisture. We would set the tent up in the dry and it would rain a couple of days later. Beetles start coming out of the ground. INSIDE the tent. You haven't lived till you've seen 2 guys in their underwear trying to shoo a couple dozen beetles out of a tent in the pre-dawn light.
 
I remember growing up east of Cincinnati OH, there was a huge hatch that caused all kinds of problems on the roadways. One spot in particular was Columbia Parkway (US50?) that ran in and out of the east side of Cincinnati, above the Ohio River, along a very steep wooded hillside. When the hatch hit, the State and Municipalities were having to use snow plows and truck mounted rotary brushes to clear the roadway because the crushed Cicadas were such a slick slimy traffic hazard. Crashes everywhere, like trying to drive on a greasy highway.
 
We had them here last year and since they only come back every 17 years and I am 75 now,,, I kind of hope that I am not here for the next go round. They are really that bad.

I am less than 15 minutes away from Columbia Pkwy and Delta. It's gonna be a mess. We've got our studded snow tires and chains on.
 
I have them every year - the more common small ones and the big boys - thumb size that will scare the beegeez out of you, especially when you're out walking in Rattlesnake territory. You find their skin sheds hanging on tree trunks and walls everywhere. Cool bugs.
 
I have lived in Ohio most of my life and experienced a few or the hatches. The last one was during the Muirfield golf tournament in Dublin Ohio which is a suburb of Columbus, they were literally everywhere. The TV announcers even did a bit of a blurb about them. It is impressive. If I can I will post some pics for you Doc. It is gonna happen around mid - late May. Ironically, with my tinnitus I hear them all the time !
 
My wife and I have experienced 4, 17-year locust invasions, and soon will experience the 5th.
 
I can't wait to hit the creek for small mouth when the Cicadas start the hatch. It's starts slow, progresses to clouds and then tapers off. The fish tear them up. Then at high point in hatch the fish are glutted with Cicada and you can't buy a bite. Tying up a few deer hair cicada bugs for fly rod any little ultra lite surface plug will work on spinning outfit, 1/8oz Hula Popper works well.
 
Seen 2 broods in my life. Last one was 2011.

Fishing sucked.... Birds were fat and loving it. People were miserable for a bit. The Bianchi Cup at my club was happening. I heard competitors complaining from all over the world saying black bugs with red eyes as they were brushing them off and trying to shoot!
