I think the consensus on this forum and others back in the day were that most of the Classics would shoot very well, and they would verify with a test target the one's to be marked "DX"; they only needed so many because of the increased price.
Again, this was only a majority opinion, which means there were some who did not agree. The S&WSC doesn't mention the DX being selected for accuracy, and I don't remember (always chancy) any authoritative information from the factory.
So your Classic may shoot as well or better than a Classic DX, but you don't have the factory target to prove it. The interchangeable sights are great, I bought an extra one for my Classic. Buyers love the grips on the DX, I think they're one of the worst possible designs ever made for heavy loads, at least for my hands.
My 5" Classic is the best centerfire handgun I own for offhand use. I usually shoot .44 Special velocity loads in magnum cases because I'm somewhat wimpy.
