As I mentioned yesterday I had a problem with the bluing on a classic model 17. All the bluing came off the front of the cylinder when I cleaned it with break free. I also had a classic 27 where the bluing was so thin you could see the metal. I'm staying away from classics. I just don't understand how a company that has been in business as long as smith can't do a decent bluing job.

i am not surprised. safety laws, EPA, cost of quality, ect. all play a part in the "cheapness" factor. you will never again see the quality of 40-50yr old guns. s&w or anyone else, i buy the old stuff.

To be completely honest with you, the bluing should not have come off the cylinder face of your revolver. The costs associated with bluing a gun consist mostly of metal surface prep before the parts hit the bluing tanks.

If you purchased the gun new, I'd call Smith & Wesson and see what they have to say about it.

Return it to S&W. They may have had a bad run of blued guns and may re-blue it for you.

I just got 22 LR pistol returned from S/W and the bluing job was extremely nice. I would return your gun, that isn't right.

CliffH,

Would you mind sharing what they charged you for the bluing job?

Thanks!
To refinish my 22LR 8 3/8'' was $180.00 plus $14.00 shipping. S/W is pretty competitive to other prices - but S/W does make sure the gun is 100% when it leaves the shop. I was impressed. Now I must say don't get in a hurray. It took right at a 4 wks to get the gun back from Smith.

Glad you got it resolved! That's how we slightly older folk know stuff, we did the "dumb" stuff year's ago!
