Who is better Clint Eastwood or John Wayne in cowboy movies?

Makes it a tough call doesn't it.......

I'll give the duke the win because he was older in the westerns and had that salty look.

Clint was tougher but while the Duke was tough too, he had a humanity that I admired. I vote for the Duke.

My .02, Charlie

At the risk of being hung by a lynch mob, my vote is for Clint.

As far as westerns go, John Wayne is the ranch owner and Clint Eastwood is more like the ranch hand. I like Clint generally but "Paint My Wagon" just wrecked the whole cowboy thing.

John Wayne,
Clint is very good as a lone wolf, he's just not a commander like John Wayne.

Clint Eastwood westerns were cynical and sureal. Especially the Italian ones. His shooting abilities were great to watch but really farfetched. His characters rarely varied from the super cool super gunfighter. But Josey Whales...that's a whole different story.
John Wayne was great in westerns up to around "Liberty Valance". Then through the 60's and 70's he always seemed to be the same guy. He looks and acts the same in The Camancheros to Chisum. Then The Shootist changed everything.
My choice. Sam Elliot.

OK. John Wayne.

John Wayne hands down and to this day if I were to see Bruce Dern walking down the street I'd punch him straight in the head for the cowardly way he killed the Duke in "The Cowboys."

I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them.

John Wayne as J.B. Books in The Shootist (1976)

It's an apples to oranges thing to me. Both very good, but different enough to make comparison hard.

That being said, I've always liked apples better.

The Duke is, was, and always will be the best cowboy, IMHO.

Since they are both actors, it would have to be the only one of the two that can act, John Wayne.

Clint Eastwood glorified everything a real man wouldn't even think of doing in his earlier films, and when he started directing his own movies he became an anti-gun, liberal, crybaby, whiner, wannabe. Just like John Kerry.

Why did you have to ruin a perfectly good morning by mentioning John Kerry. He didn'y "earn " his pompous elitism. He married into it. The he dumped her for a richer chic.
Hollywood gushed all over Clint because he made Unforgiven, which they felt was an apology for all the gratuitous violence in his early film. Even though he killed everyone in the end he made that sad little speech after they killed the guys for the bounty. This is one of the most overrated movies of all time. But I still like his other movies. The Gauntlet was 90 mins. of my life squandered away. Absolutely horrible with his bland girl freind in it as usual.

John wayne. Sam elliott looks the precieved part more than anyone at his older age. It seems that john wayne didnt act at all, but just played his own self.
