Once again, I feel compelled as I was a year or so ago to clear up the entire controversy.

First, Clint's not as big as he looks on screen; he's actually quite diminutive.

Second, because of his size, a Model 19 6-inch .357 was used throughout the series but consistently referred to as a Magnum .44.

It was all just movie magic that for decades has fooled all but the most discerning. Case closed!

Is there medical marijuana available where you live? If not, go somewhere where it is.

I watched Dirty Harry and Magnum Force. At the end of Dirty Harry when Clint goods thru the whole '' I know what your thinking'' line, you get a really good look at his 29,and it as a pinned barrel. When Magnum Force starts Clint is holding his 29 for several minutes and all you see is the side of the gun. That 29 does not have a pinned barrel. I always thought he used the same 44 in all the Dirty Harry movies. Anyone have info or knowledge on the different guns used?

Hello, I am Dirty Harry fan living in Asia. Sorry for digging out the old thread, but I would like to share this pic found in the internet.
The M29 is pinned.

Took this picture several years ago at Camp Perry when the NRA had some of Eastwood's movie guns on display. Glare is from the gun being under glass. The emblem on the grip is to John Milius and Clint Eastwood.

Colt Walker repro's from "The Outlaw Josey Wales".

From "Pale Rider".

And from "Tightrope".

MrTrolleyguy, please post your affidavit? Who's it from? First I've heard of this.

I argued this with my buddy he has a 8 3/8" barreled m29 that he swears was used in the movie. I say it was a 6 1/2" barrel.

Now I'm thinking possibly when he has the bad guy on the ground with the barrel in his face the camera shot is up the barrel. Could this be a 8 3/8" barrel making it just look bigger. The 45 caliber did cross my mind for the appearence of a bigger bore. Of course if it wasn't done, like you guys say is correct did they have some sort of photo shop in those days? I swear in some shots the barrel looks longer than 6 1/2"?

Lens to subject distance has a big influence on the relative sizes of things in the image. The classic example is a straight on portrait taken close up - noses get huge and ears get tiny, and the closer the camera was the bigger the nose seems. Because we all know intutitively the relative sizes of ears and noses, the close up shot with the (relatively) big nose also makes the whole head seem like it's really "deep."

Same thing will happen with a gun barrel pointed at the lens - the closer it is to the lens, the bigger the muzzle will look, AND the (relatively) smaller cylinder will make it feel like the barrel must be a really long one.

Do you remember if the badge is inlaid into the grip or just screwed on top? My friend had a replica made and isn't convinced it's inlaid into the wood.

A S&W M57 in .41 magnum was actually used in the first DH movie if I recall correctly.
