Clint Eastwood's 44 Magnum

The real question is Harry wearing boxers, briefs, or going commando. And was his choice of undies or lack of used consistently throughout the Dirty Harry movies?

OK. Time to dispel the myths and answer the questions. The gun was a fake, made out of wood and old pinball machine parts. Clint Eastwood was never in the movie. The actor was a really good look alike and each film used a different actor. After all, "A man's got to know his limitations".

On a level of seriousness....two guns would have made more sense. A 57 with a longer barrel would have actually been a good choice because San Fransisco PD actually issued model 58 .41 Magnums. One of my all time favorite guns I ever owned was a SFPD marked 58 carried both at San Fransisco and later by a DEA agent. Harry carrying a longer adjustable sighted version of the duty gun would have made an interesting sideline. Portraying Harry as more of a marksman.

A .45 based gun like a 25-2 or 5 to easier run blanks.

Going with the .44 was calculated and created a interesting legend. In a funny way, had Milius went .42 Mag, it may have made that a cartridge of our time.

Seen Clint Eastwood in this last night.....And he wasn't carrying no S&W .44

Don't know if he was carrying this instead?

The scene in Kezar Stadium when he is aiming at Scorpio -- depending on your screen and equipment -- can make the barrel look awful long. I have sometimes thought that if they did insert an 8 3/8 in barreled revolver into the movie for "looks" it might have been here.

But personally, I think it's just a 6.5 inch barrel with a neat lens that makes it look so big.

Oh, and by the way, using the Canadian Stadium method of determining height and distance by the relation of the stadium seats to the upright posts that was originally invented by Neal Young and William Shatner at the Vancouver Winter Olympics, Eastwood is 6 foot, 3 and half inches in this photograph.

Have always liked Clint Eastwood and especially the Dirty Harry series. I wish he would have done one more to end the series. Never really cared for the one with Sondra Locke, never really cared for her either! Always liked the .44 though!;)
I never knew that Eastwood starred in that Creature film until the other night when I saw it on television? :)

He actually used a 41 magnum. But was portrayed as a 44 magnum.
I've seen the Model 29 reportedly used in Dirty Harry and Magnum Force in the NRA museum:

http://www.nramuseum.org/guns/the-galleries/hollywood-guns/cops,-robbers-and-a-galaxy-far-far-away/dirty-harry-(1971)-smith-wesson-29.aspx

To skeptics however what is reported to be used in Dirty Harry and Magnum Force doesn't man it's true.

Consequently, I took a screen shot from the bank robbery scene in Dirty Harry - You know, the one where he says "do you feel lucky?"

I blew the screen shot up and on the right side of the barrel you can clearly read ".44 MAGNUM"

Thus, they used a Model 29 not a Model 57.

Can you please stop posting things like facts on the internet.....;)

I did the same thing from an HD version of that scene and you do not clearly see ".44 MAGNUM" on the right side of the barrel, it is smudged out. Even after working on a blow-up of the barrel in Photoshop (lighting & sharpness settings), I was not able to get a readable text.

Can you post your picture of the barrel from that scene?

"44 Magnum" is easy to read in the final "do ya punk?" scene in the gravel pit at the end on the DVD with any decent TV.

I looked at that scene too, and I still could not blow anything up that was legible. Although I was not able to find an HD clip of the gravel pit scene. Maybe a big screen TV will make a difference.

Yep. And did you know he also had a bit part in a Francis The Talking Mule movie? He was a Sailor at San Diego, CA

Bah!! It was a mis-marked barrel!:p

This is the 44 Magnum used by Clint Eastwood in Magnum Force. It is a 4-screw in the S206000 range if I remember correctly. Two Model 29-2s were supplied by S&W for the movie, Dirty Harry. They were made from parts in the tool room as the model was not in production at the time the guns were needed. Each has a 6 1/2-inch barrel and bright blue finish.

The movie poster for The Dead Pool shows a 29-2 with an 8 3/8-inch barrel, but a long barreled 44 Magnum was never used in any of the movies.

OK, does anyone want to know who REALLY shot Kennedy??? Anyone?...

Of course, it all makes sense now!

Dirty Harry did it!
He was the guy on the grassy knoll!
The "magic bullet" was really from the .458 Magnum he used in the first movie!
What became of that gun?
Why was Clint was hiding out in Italy making spaghetti westerns in mid 60s???
Why did he make "Line of Fire", where he plays a Secret Service agent who had been on JFKs detail when he was assassinated?

It all adds up!

I bet if I play all his movies backwards, I'll find a hidden message!

Hope I didn't just spawn a new conspiracy theory. But it makes as much sense as a lot of the ones floating around:-)

Why argue about Hollywood stuff? Everybody knows they aren't real but, I did enjoy Eastwood in the Dirty Harry movies. Soo many opinions here, must be everyone remembers different takes of different scenes?HEHEHE
