When I bought my 1917 on Gunbroker, the previous owner said I had to use half moon clips. Is there any reason I can't use full moon clips?

full moon

I like the full moons made by Beckham Product Design. They are not metal, very easy to load-unload, no tools. Out of the dozens I have only broke one over the years. I have bent alot of the metal ones. style Rimz25 for your 1917.

I prefer the full moon clips myself, for both the Colt and the S&W M1917s. To me, they are easier to load and unload, and you only have to use half as many!

NOTE: you will probably want to buy one of the unloading tools to go with it. They are shaped sort of like a question mark and are made of sheet metal.....makes unloading and hanging on to your spent brass MUCH easier.

Here's a couple of examples:

Wilson Combat Full Moon Clip Case Extractor Matte - MidwayUSA

Ranch Full Moon Clip Case Extractor Matte - MidwayUSA

I also use the full moon clips by Beckham and really like them.

Just remember that you don't have to use clips at all if you don't want to. Until about 1988 or so, S&W used chamber dimensions that correctly headspaced the cases on the case mouth rather than reaming them too deep (as they do now) and relying on moonclips to hold the cases in place properly.

I never use clips of any type in my 25-2. I don't shoot in any action type games where the advantage of fast reloads would come into play. I simply pick the cases out of the chambers with my fingertips, and they come right out, even with +P loads. You can also use auto rim cases and have easy ejection with the ejector star.:)

I took this picture awhile back to illustrate the different types of moon clips.
