Yesterday my Wife and I were in Mansfield, Ohio taking care of a few chores. On the way back home, we were on Rt. 30, which is a divided highway. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a buck begin to run across the road, so I braked hard, as it came into my lane in front of me.
It lost its footing on the concrete and slid under the front of my truck, and the right front wheel/tire hit it or ran over it, probably near it hindquarters. It got up and ran into a nearby wooded area. I couldn't see it limping, but it was running like a bat out of Hades.

Checked the truck and there was no damage at all. I'm hoping the Buck wasn't hurt as I don't want it suffering and die a painful death.:(

Sorry for the buck. But the important question is, What did you buy at Fin, Feather and Fur? or did you run over to Sportsman's Den?

When I shop at those places and the wife is with me, I always get her a case of either 9mm or 20 gauge shells, it softens the blow of how much I spend on reloading supplies!

In Wyoming, there are 2 types of drivers! Those that have hit deer and those that will hit deer. We live 20 miles rural. My wife commutes that 3 to 5 times a week for work. I'm retired but worked construction, so a lot of miles driving early morning or in the evening. I've lost track of how many deer have committed suicide by our autos. It's $500 deductible every time for my wife. I was always in a company truck when one would jump out in front of me. You learn to brake if you can but drive thru them. Your car will take damage, but stay on the road. Drive safe!

Were you east or west of I-70? I assume west. It seems odd to me that if you brake, you hit them. If you don't brake, you hit them. At times, they just to be car magnets.
I had one hit me in Virginia one night when I was at a dead stop.

I saw a small herd starting to run across the road in front of me in my headlights. I braked and stopped. Wham! A deer plowed into my right front fender, somersaulted over the hood, and disappeared over the left front fender. I didn't see it run away, so I got out and walked around the hood to see what had happened. As soon as the deer saw me, it jumped up and ran off into the woods, leaving me with a mammoth dent in my right front fender.

Cost me fifty bucks to fix, and this being 1968 or so, and me 16 or 17, it was a lot of, uh, bucks to me.

Man, those dang deer don't care if you're stopped! They run into people's living rooms and bedrooms for pete's sake. Saw one other day, video posted here I think, some deer runs right through the plate glass window of a beauty parlor, rampages around scaring the bejeez outta the customers, and then runs out the broken door again.

Einsteins, they are not.

Didn't stop at the Fin. Took our camper to the dealer in Galion so they could winterize it for us. Stopped at AAA so the Wife could get brochures/maps for the Tennessee area, as her and her 2 daughters can take a trip in November.

We also stopped at LensCrafters so they could repair Wifey Pooh's glasses.
Drove by her old house, which she sold a couple months ago too.
It was a beautiful day and a nice drive, except for the poor buck.

Bill, glad you & Penny are OK. Glad you didn't swerve and end up in a ditch. Go to Amish Country, nice time for a ride? Larry

Thanks Larry. We went to Amish Country on Monday. That too was a nice drive and a good day. She walked around the shops and I found benches or chairs to set my butt on while she did so.:D I did get some popcorn and beef jerky.

The Batmobile with 242,000 miles on it that I just sold was a deer magnet. One I nailed squarely when it jumped out from behind a big evergreen on the side of the road. It ended up flying across two lanes of highway and well into the yard on the opposite side of the road. Its back legs or hips must have been broken and the deputy sheriff ended up putting it down. Another time the deer actually hit my car door with its head and disappeared. I stopped to look for it but it was nowhere to be seen.

Sneak Attack

In North Idaho two years ago, one hour after sunset, rainy night, just pulling out of town 45 mph, I accepted a side impact on driver's door and rear panel. I did not see it coming. I doubled back a few times and found no evidence either side of road, thankfully no bicycle or shopping cart. My bronco, however, was wiped to the tune of 2500$. Next day I searched both sides of the road and found no indication of disturbed brush, soil, nor fur. What ever hit me must have determined I deserved it.

I was T-boned by a deer while going 60 mph. There was no getting out of his way since it broadsided me. It did more damage to whole right side of car than when I was sideswiped by a drunk driver going the wrong way on the expressway. I quite often saw dead deer on the side of the road where I got hit. It was about dusk when the deer ran into me. The driver behind me said the deer was knocked 12' in the air by my car and that was a side hit. Right now I can picture the deer's eyes looking right at me below my rear view mirror. It seemed like it happened in slow motion. If I had hit the deer with my front bumper I probably wouldn't have been able to drive away.
You got lucky for sure.

We had a man killed by a deer sometimes back in Belton Tx. The car ahead of him hit the deer, it flew over the first car and went right into the windshield of the car behind him. The next car back had a nurse from the hospital and she and the others who stopped tried their hardest to save his life, but he died. At least people did try to help.

My Armada got broadsided by a deer coming across the street going warp 9, caught me in the rear passenger door and was dead right there.
The truck behind me stopped and picked it up and through it in the truck bed and took off.

here in Berks County,Pa.,the deer seem to congregate on the roads. I`ve had so many close calls.I hate deer. Wish the hunters would kill em all

Here in the northeast we're having moose-car collisions more and more often. A plumber I know nailed one and came to a stop with the dead moose at kissing distance with its chin on his steering wheel. It almost totaled his brand new pickup. Several people have been killed when the car takes out the legs and the moose crashes through the windshield or crushes the roof.

The wife of a co-worker was driving to work early one morning when the car in front of her hit a deer. The deer was thrown pretty high into the air, and was vertical, head down when it hit her. The head hit the windshield and the roof-line decapitated the poor deer and dropped the rather messy head into the passenger seat next to her, with the torso sliding off the roof behind her.

She drove off the road about 25 yards into a fallow field, and jumped out of the car and ran screaming into the woods. The State Troopers tracked him down at our work somehow and asked him to come out to try and talk her down a bit. Sure John, you go take care of your wife. Not a problem.
