I am looking for information about purchasing a 357 to carry in the woods. I have had in the past mod 19, 27, 28 but it seems they have gotten so expensive and since I am on a fixed income I can't afford these anymore. I haven't kept up with with the revolvers for the past 20 years and would like some information what would be a good revolver and a good price. Thanks.

I suggest looking at used revolvers from S&W, Ruger, etc - that's what I did. A new gun I don't own, but considered because of its generally positive reviews and reasonable price is a Weihrach Windicator:

Windicator- Weihrauch - European American Armory Corp

Again, I have no personal experience with them and will stick to the used revolvers I have.

I certainly like my 4” sp101, if you have arthritis you may want after market grips.

It hits the sweet spot, easy to pack but still heavy enough to shoot 357.

If a single action tickles your fancy, the Ruger Blackhawk is hard to beat.

For a double action 357 Magnum, Ruger GP-100 or S&W 586 or 686 would be really good picks. You can sometimes find these in the used gun area of gun shops.

Ruger GP100. I saw one on Armslist for $400 used in great shape today. But I unfortunately don't live in Kentucky. It is a 4". I have had a 6" for over 20 years and it is still a great revolver.

You may want to consider one in stainless steel. They resist rust better than the blued ones. You may be able to find a used S&W 66 at a reasonable price. If not a Ruger BlackHawk or Vaquero may fit the bill nicely. There seems to a endless amount of choices in the 357 arena. Enjoy the search.

Don't overlook S&W stainless - still "reasonable" pricing

I too became "fixed income" on January 1, this year. Just getting used to all new budgeting.

In any event like you are looking for a woods carry in KY, I think you probably hit on the best all around caliber (357) and considering some guns this for sure means cheaper 38 Special for target and practice.

I would certainly look for used S & W Model 65 and Model 66. The only difference is fixed sights (Model 65) and adjustable sights (Model 66). Both are found around here, used, in the $400 - 450 range, but usually face-to-face private deals...LGS is $100 higher.

Both my M65-3 (1986) and my M66-6 (2002) are 4", stainless and believe it or not the 66 was cheaper than the 65 (probably because of the Internal Lock...which has never given me any trouble to this date).

The only thing I have not found with the later dash number 66 is the two piece, sleeved barrel, which I see from other posts years back can be canted, but again I have no personal experience and my 66-6 is a one piece barrel.

Both guns are great to shoot and very accurate. For me, both guns need rubber grips when running full house Magnum ammo, otherwise the factory Magna's on the 65 are fine, and the 66 came new in box (well blue plastic case anyway) with Uncle Mikes rubbers already on it.

Another thought is specify exactly what you are looking for and post a "Want to Buy" add in the appropriate sub-forum right here. You may just be surprised at the responses you may get.:D

Good luck in your search.

I would advertise in the " want to buy" section of this forum and look for a M28-2. I would not be ashamed to mention budget constraints. Check pawn shops, but I would prefer to buy from somebody here on this site

A cheap woods gun in .357, I'm thinking plinking and defense against 2 & 4 legged aggressive type critters and something that if it gets worn and scratched up a bit may not hurt the function. While I've never purchased a Taurus revolver I know other that have and for what you're looking for should fall within your needs for around $350.00

I second the motion for the Ruger Security Six , either 4" or 6" barrel . A very well built 357 and they are very accurate . Right now the best bang for the buck , about $400 , sometimes a bit less . The Blackhawk if single action is fine with you . I have 3 rugers in single action , a 22 mag , 41 mag and 45 Colt . That's how much I like them and wouldn't hesitate to buy another , maybe one in 357 magnum . Regards, Paul

I have a Taurus 605 that does everything well except look good.
Go over to the Taurus forum and see what they say about the Model 66. I've been lusting for one of those.
Model 66 vs 627?

The Speed Six is great also. but if you're going to use a variety of loads, you want adjustable sights. The older Taurus stainless is a good pistol in either J or K frame size. later ones have quality control issues. I've bought used ones for $250 at LGS and shows.
