I'm sure middle Tennessee isn't the only area getting hit with super cold temperatures. We haven't even been making the normal low for our daily high. And it's supposed to get worse this weekend, and last into next week. Also some snow on the way. We've been getting down to near single digits at night, and low 20s in the day. This is dangerously cold. There have already been a couple deaths due to the cold, and also some pets that froze to death after being left outside all night with just an uninsulated doghouse. I'd like to ask everyone to check on any elderly relatives or neighbors to make sure they are ok, and that their furnace filters are clean and the water lines are ok. If they are in need of groceries or medicine, do a good deed and go get it for them, so they don't have to get out in the cold. Space heaters can be very dangerous, and there have been a number of house fires on the news caused by space heaters. Also, please, please bring your pets inside during severe cold. If that's not possible, make sure they have plenty of insulation and/or straw or blankets in their house, as well as a flap over the door opening. Position the door away from the previaling wind. Check on them often. A little common sense and thoughtfulness can save a life. I hope everyone is keeping warm, and if you have any excess heat, please send some to Nashville!

It was so cold here over the weekend that we got a robo-call from MetEd asking people not to use extra electricity between the hours of 3:00 PM and 9:00 PM, because a lot of people here depend on electric heat.

Brass Monkey Warning!

The present cold winter weather will be eclipsed later this week by a Polar cold outbreak of record-breaking proportions. A huge mass of air in the Yukon is moving south and will accelerate under the strong jet stream. Looks like it will hit SW Oklahoma Wed PM and push all the way into the Gulf, and spread SE into FL. Expect temps 20 to 30 degrees below normal, and chill factors to match.

My folks got a propane delivery at 7:00 this morning. Another example of people doing their best when the going is tough. I on the other hand did not make my first appointment until 11:00.
Mom said it was 1 degree at 1 o'clock when she checked on her water drips. Single handle faucet at the kitchen sink froze the cold water side. Off to fix that now.

Good post . Also a good idea to leave cabinet doors open under sinks/faucets on outside walls . Usually the kitchen .

Just another good reason to hate winter, although with this storm it really doesn't look like you can go anywhere other then Hawaii to get warm. Larry

It was -36 when I came to work one morning last week, it didn't even get a blip in the media, today it's a balmy 7 degrees, but it's heading for the sub zero cellar tonight, I've seen -22 with wind chills lots lower than that predicted for tonight. Shrug, I just turn up the electric blanket a tic, and usually have a dog in bed with me, and no for all you smart***'s, she's 4 got legs.

Every winter we comment that the only weather in the US that matters is in Seattle, and then nothing until Minneapolis, God Forbid it should dip below freezing on the east coast, it's an epic tragedy and news worthy as all get out!

You Rebs will survive, just use your heads, 'sides, it can't be that cold down there.

Don't drive with the inexperienced, keep your bare skin covered, and hunker down for a few days, it'll be fine.

Take care...

gunlovingirl, are you my Wifes other sister?

gunlovingirl you sound like you could be my wife's other sister. It's a balmy 9 above right now but yesterday morning it was -12. She was really upset about a dog she saw down the street out in the cold, so she delivered one of our "spare" dog houses to a total stranger. She collects strays like I collect S@Ws. Come to think of it, that's how she got me. Guess I shouldn't complain.

I woke up this AM around 6:00, it was 14F according to my digital weather thermometer outside the north side of the house. An hour later temp had dropped to 12F. Wx man is predicting 4-6 inches of the white stuff for the Memphis area, more near the TN/KY/MO border starting Wed PM continuing Thur AM. TDOT is already spraying salt solution on the interstates, hiways and major roads. I imagine there is a mad rush going on at the grocery stores for bread and milk. Everyone stay warm and stay safe.

Misty,
GREAT advice!!

I've had Reeda, the outside dog in the basement kennel all week (at night). Today, she's inside for the day as well...brrrrrr!

Jazper, the inside dog and full blooded noodlehead has to be "convinced" to do her "duty" when let out...she wants RIGHT back inside!

Reeda's kennel/house is fully insulated with a thick rubber flap on the door (facing southeast) and a full nest of cedar chips to cozy up in...she's good. She's now 11 yrs. so I cut her plenty of slack...if the temperature drops to (or is predicted to drop) zero or below....she gets a pass into the basement.

Al Gore is jetting on down to the islands for some climate change.

21 degrees right now. But it feels warm since the wind is calm. I was out in my car the other night (I use it to try to conserve gas when I don't need the truck) and stopped to get gas. I left the lights on for the two minutes it took for me to put some gas in...

WELL... my battery had been getting low, so that slight extra drain with my car off coupled with the 8 degree temp that night.... yep my car didn't start. :(

Luckily my father lives near where I was so he came and gave me a jump... I got a new battery yesterday.

Personally though... I enjoy the cold. Walks up in the woods on a frigid day.. crunching through the frozen snow.. can't beat that!
