My wife and I will be traveling back from Christiansburg, Va sometime soon and would like to stop at Cabela's in Columbus, Ohio to break up an 11 hour drive. We don't want to spend an arm and a leg for a motel room, but do want one that is clean, safe and comfortable. Do any of you have any reccomendations for a motel near the Cabella's in Columbus? Thanks!

Stay away from the ones around I-71 and 161 and Morse roads.
LOTS of drug activity and the crime that goes with it.

I b'lieve there are 2 or 3 places close to, if not actually ON, Polaris Parkway, which is where the Cabelas is. That part of town is a skoash upmarket but it IS a good bit safer to crash overnight around there.

If you are coming up I 77 I suggest you go up to I 70 and head east to Wheeling and look at the one there. It is well worth the trip. It is about an hour and a half east from I 77. The Columbus store is a mall store. It is not very big. The one in Charleston WV is also a mall store. The one in Wheeling is not. It is a Hub store. It is a LOT bigger than the ones in Charleston and Columbus. They also have a warehouse in behind the store. If they do not have it in the store, they check the inventory in the warehouse. They will sell it to you and give you an invoice to pick it up at the warehouse in back. :)

The Wheeling store is very nice and extremely large. They have a whitetail hall in there that will make you drool. They have a large cafeteria and a arcade shooting range. In short this store is built as a destination store.:) You will not be disappointed if you have to sidetrack from your travel plans.

I have been to all three and I can tell you for a fact that Wheeling is much better than the other two. Not to take anything away from the other two but the first words out of peoples mouths that have never stepped inside one before is "WOW". I have heard it every time I have been there. Just sayin.

I also recommend the cold, sliced, smoked elk sandwich with French fries. It is very good. I hope this helps you out.:)

There is a Holiday Inn Express next to the old Polaris Amphitheater, it is within a mile of Cabala's, just across I-71. It may have an "Orion Dr" address? There are other medium grade hotels and a Hilton in the Polaris area. 2 exits south and you are in the 161 corridor, that is murder central for the north end of Columbus. If you have a choice, the Wheeling and Dundee stores are both bigger and nicer than the Columbus store (Think oversized Target). I live in the area and was disappointed from the day you could see the size of the foundation! You can PM me if you need any more help or info. Ivan

Last year on a trip to Columbus, we got a very good online deal at the Blackwell. In season, the price is sky high as it's the four star accommodation for every OSU alumnus. Off peak though you can get a room at a significant discount. It is in the heart of Buckeye Land, and is close driving proximity to Cabelas.

The whole Bed Bug thing slipped my mind, I retired from rental housing and apartments. We were #3 in the country about 4 years ago behind New York and Chicago. When I travel I won't accept a room until I inspect the bed, by pulling the sheet above the pillows and using a SureFire light and checking the creases around the edge tuft, Those little buggers are almost clear until they've fed for the first time, then they are scab colored. I offer for management to inspect my luggage, but they have always refused. My bed bug trainer was in a 5 star hotel in Chicago, and found BB's They insisted he was lying, so he put 5 from the bed in a test jar. They offered another room, he canceled his credit card payment and went elsewhere. Ivan

Thanks for all the replies! I took a little time today to look at the atlas and see that if I stay south on my return to Morton, Il from Christiansburg, Va that the Cabelas in Louisville, ky would be an option. Anyone out there with some info on the Louisville store and motels near this store? Again, thanks to all for the info.
Ron

Personally I woud recommend you skip on Cabela's anywhere. Instead travel another 80 miles north to the exit for Ashland, Ohio Rt. 250. Then head east about 1/2 mile and you will see Fin, Feather, and Fur on the north side of 250.

Aumiller's is at the corner of State St. (route #3) and Main st. Westerville. about 4 miles from Cabela's. 614-891-0656, I had to look up the number because I have on speed dialer #4. Ivan
Very good LGS. Dan is a good friend. Still called Aumiller's but Alex runs things now. He changed the shop hours..........now it's open at 9:00am!!
