I went into my favorite local shop today, just to see what they had. Turns out they have four or five revolvers that piqued my interest and I am actually considering buying three of them if not all five.

The prices seem reasonable, but there is one I'm not sure about.

The most expensive and the one I know the least about is a 5 inch 38/44 Heavy Duty. It dates to 1935 and appears to be all original, not modified to .357, including the large medallion grips, no box. The finish is a deep rich blue, probably 90%+ (some holster wear at the muzzle and cylinder drag line). Asking price is $995.

Since I know very little about this model, is this a decent price?

The others range in price from $495 to $650 each and are:

1. Model-10-8 in nickel (Dates to 1980ish) in very nice shape, no finish wear that I can see.

2. Model 28-2 6 inch, very clean, Packmeyer grips, no evident wear on the finish.

3. Model 19 in nickel, much like the model 10 above in condition, 1976ish dates.

4. Model-36 dating 1967, square butt. Has obvious signs of being carried, but not beat up.

If I were to get the three that most interest me, they come to $2050 + tax. The total asking price for all 5 comes to just under $3200 + tax. I was thinking of offering somewhere between $2500 to $2800 for all of them.

Am I in the ball park on this? Too much? Too low?

It sounds like a fun and flexible negotiation. I'd ask for $100 off each price if I was buying 3 guns. Tell him you'll buy all 5 if he knocks $150 off each price. See what happens.

I don't know much about the Heavy Duty, others will know a lot more. It could be a huge bargain even at $1000. I do think if you can get the guns you've numbered 1, 2, and 3 for anywhere near $500 each, grab 'em. I wouldn't worry about the Model 36. That's a minnow and you're after trophy fish today.

What bbl length. The shorter the better as far as value goes. The 28-2, better pull those rubber grips and see what's underneath. the HD grips could be worth half the asking price, depending on what they are and the condition.

If I'm doing a multi purchase, you better believe I'm going to get
the prices knocked down. Don't play around, come right out and
tell the guy you are interested in buying the lot, for lot price. The
worst thing you can do is act like you have to have them. If you
can walk, you will get a deal. If you have let the guy know you
want them bad, you are done. You got to know when to hold them, and when to fold them.

The 10 and 19 are 4 inch. Pulled off the Pachmeyer's and it's clean underneath, no pitting or rust, it looks very unfired and uncarried. Lock up on the 28 is incredibly tight.

I went back and bought four of the five, all but the Model 36, $2330+ tax or $582.50+ tax per gun if you average them out.

The grips on the 38/44 are serialed to the gun. The only thing missing is the box and papers. They all look like they have just been sitting in someones drawer for the past however many years.

I just love a happy ending.

I don't know much about the M36, but at about $600 each for the others, I think you did great. Especially the HD ... you did well on that one.
