IRS plans to hire 10,000 workers to relieve massive backlog
The IRS is announcing plans to hire 10,000 new workers to help reduce a massive backlog that the Biden administration says will make this tax season the most challenging in history

I have Received two letters from the IRS both of them written to make you feel like you are some kind of crook. why don't they just say we have a massive backlog and you're out of luck

Still working on mine, from 2018, very easy to see that
the money was from a Roth acc.
Save all your Roth 1099's and paperwork, I have/had still don't
know the hold up.
FYI:
Capital Switchboard: 202-224-3121 for msg. to your senator.

The key to quick service

I learned the hard way 2 yrs. ago when my refund took 6 months to arrive. I filed electronic returns the last two years and get my refunds wired to my bank account within two weeks of filing.

The IRS has two major problems. First the Congress likes to squeeze their budget because we all hate the IRS. Unfortunately, that means no new hires but existing employees get all their raises, etc. Second, the IRS got tasked with sending all the stimulus checks which took precedence over regular tax return biz.

There's really nothing you can do other than file your return electronically. You might end up getting two refunds.

Still waiting on 2019 and 2020. As a result, I never saw any pandemic relief funds. They don't see a tax return, you don't exist, you didn't get checks.

If you find yourself stuffing papers into an envelope and licking a stamp: STOP.

File electronically. Its 2022.

^^^ well….I am renewing our passports. No choice to go print everything out and send it in with our old passports, which will be returned to us even though they are expired. No option for online submission with a digital photo. Heck I am sure they can verify and cross reference all this with my current information they have on file for me between the passport office and the VA. Had to go to Walgreens for passport approved hard copy photos. Go figure….

Tried the electronic way and they wouldnt take it so had to mail. No return here, had to pay. Didn't take them long to cash my check, went thru my bank in less than 3 weeks. Priorities I guess.

Filed mine electronically. Got a nasty letter saying they couldn't verify my identity and made me send a sample of DNA (not really, but close enough to be disconcerting).

Now told that I'm verified, but it's going to be at least another 9 weeks before they even look at my return.

Useless bunch of dolts.

Discovered a few weeks ago that I only had 1 clear page for visas in my 6 year old passport. A number of countries now require three clean pages or the airline will not let you board. A few years ago you could simply ask for another 20 pages to be inserted for only a minimal cost in an unexpired passport...no longer!! So went through the full Monty and asked for a 56 page renewal. It actually only took 4 weeks and just over $200 in fees for the new one (with 56 pages) to come, plus a few days later, my cancelled prior passport arrived. Then, and I dreaded the next bit...I have used the Trusted Traveler / Global Entry system since it was first installed almost 9 years ago and I would have to change my passport number/expiry date. Thinking this would be a Royal PITA, I gingerly accessed the correct CBP page and "surprize" it only took a couple of minutes. Dave_n

This is not your father's IRS. They are swamped with undone work and retirement of the competent and the new employees have learned more how to goof off from home than process work. Your tax dollars at work. Expect nothing and you will not be disappointed. My corporate clients are collectively waiting for tens of millions from 2014 through 2017 with no end in sight. At least they pay interest, when they get around to it.

that happened to me last year. Had to jump through a lot of hoops to prove that I was who I said. Then they said yes you are the right person so we will get your refund to you in three months or so

People are waiting months for their refunds. I get a letter from the IRS 3-4 weeks after I filed electronically saying that I had miscalculated the tax due and I owed an additional $3. $3.00!! I used TurboTax so if it was wrong it was their fault.

At least the letter said since the amount was so small, no additional payment was necessary.
My first thought was if that was the case, they could have saved taxpayers the cost of the postage to mail me the letter!

I got an IRS letter saying that I had made an error and I had one week to reply. I scrambled and got the reply back within the one week time period. They said I owed additional money and was being charged interest. I hadn't made an error, they had read the number off a form incorrectly. They got their reply in the required week but it has been almost three months since the letter was sent in. You have to jump through hoops to satisfy them but they can take their sweet timr in getting back to you!

sorry op.
scammers hacked our taxes five or so years ago. we have had to use a pin to file for years…super frustrating…takes months.

best recent irs story....
my buddy got laid off and got hired on by the irs. covid hit a couple weeks later. he got paid for seven months and never did a dad-blame thing! he stayed home and enjoyed his "job" until they called everyone in, then he quit.

i love this story.

We filed electronically thru H&R Block in March and our return was deposited in our checking account a little over a week later. I think the ID thing is a legal requirement as our tax preparer, who we've dealt with for a few years now had to look at our driver's licenses.

I sent my tax payment back when they were due and the check still hasn't been cashed... But I did send it USPS and I'm coming to the point of not trusting our postal service

I keep paying in a lot each year...thought for sure they'd send me a thank you note for being such a good customer. :(

I hear you! It's like maybe somebody messed with the logistics system to decrease our faith and confidence in the USPS so we would lose DeJoy of receiving or having our mail delivered in a timey manner. Stamps went up, mail slowed down and now there is a cracker and chip machine out front which is really odd.

Why do I have a feeling that most if not all of these new hires will be there to squeeze more money out of us, not to "help us " get our refunds sooner.

They want you to send in electronically so they can "work" from home. When the gooberment wants you to use a certain alternative, they make the other alternatives extree difficult.

This year the state demanded a full copy of your fed tax return be included with your state filing , if sending in paper return. Makes me wonder how they get it if filed electronically?. Then they waited a month and sent my return back for insufficient postage. There ain't no coincidences. They used to fix and adjust your return for simple things, now they make paper filing as difficult as possible. Spent over 25 yrs working for the state gooberment, and don't trust em as far as i can spit.
