coronavirus

We're trying to devise the best method to avoid the "Coronavirus": Should we put up signs stating "Coronavirus Quarantine Area"? Or, "Coronavirus Free Zone".....which has been sooooo effective with firearms? memtb

Most of this is being blown way out of proportion. While COVID-19 is serious, it's not the black plague.

From 1 Oct 2019 to 1 Feb 2020 there were over 12,000 deaths in the US from the flu. As of yesterday, there were 16 deaths from COVID-19. World wide there have been about 93,000 cases and of those 50,000 have already recovered.

Seriously folks, the common flu is far more virulent and deadly. There is no need to panic. We should be smart, but we should be doing that on a daily basis anyway.

In my opinion, this is an excellent presentation on Covid-19 by Dr. Amesh Adalja, Johns Hopkins Senior Scholar, Tepper Alumnus.

He discusses earlier corona viruses and Covid-19. He descrives how they spread, and that they're more common than many of us realize. He's a fast talker, but the video is filled with some good information.

Great info - thanks. The news here in St Louis area just announced (743pm Mar 7) the first confirmed case in Missouri. A young woman who had recently returned from studying in Italy. Her family is quarantined at home but who knows how many people she/they have made contact with.

If NBC CBS ABC CNN every other media outlet would dial back the doomsday rhetoric and maybe actually report the FACTS and the general public would stop acting like a bunch of sheeple following the script and actually think then maybe all this overinflated bovine excrement would stop smelling like what it is.

That's an excellent talk. Thanks!

I'm 73 and have respatory broblems. copd, asbestosis just to name a few. People say we should not go out and purchase the masks. I wear my masks to protect myself from those who do not know they have the virus and practice no personal hygene when they are sick. Vice President Prence said we should not wear masks and save them for the health care workers who may be tending very important people. To which I say bull feathers. my life and the lives of those around me are very important to me. So I will wear my masks as it protects me from people who may not have or may have this virus. I have a 2 year old grandson and at some times he can be a handfull. I enjoy my time with him. He is the only grandson in our family. Frank.

I should have mentioned that 230 in Italy have died of the virus with 5988 cases identified as of just now. Two US TSA screeners have become infected as well.

It's deadly serious in Italy, and they are considering locking down the Lombardy region from all travel.

They did it. Here is the map of quarantined regions, that's 16 million people quarantined.

Looks bad for the critically ill. I saw this on Reuters this morning:

"We're now being forced to set up intensive care treatment in corridors, in operating theaters, in recovery rooms. We've emptied entire hospital sections to make space for seriously sick people," Antonio Pesenti, head of the Lombardy regional crisis response unit, told the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

"One of the best health systems in the world, in Lombardy is a step away from collapse," he said.

I don't need no masks or sanitizers or none a them other things...I'm protected when I'm inside...

Back in Germany, it was my aunt's 91st birthday today. My folks had to sneak into her apartment in the senior residence in ones and twos at timed intervals not to attract attention, because large gatherings had been banned by management.

Since it may well be my aunt's last, they weren't going to let a virus stop them.

When I got my aunt on the phone, she was very happy that the operation, including insertion and extraction of participants, had been a success. She sounded a bit like she was telling me about the Raid on Entebbe ;)

An old (88) family friend has been in assisted living for over a year and is very frail. This isn't looking good for him nor my 88 yr old mother. The people pooh poohing this at this stage are truly lame and proud of it.

It's not ok to make fun while people are dying, we don't really know where this is going right now.

Thank your first responders, police, fire, EMS, and healthcare professionals who are in the mix.

arjay, my mom is almost 87 with COPD. She is at extremely high risk from any flu virus.

She hasn't pulled a Howard Hughes yet but she is limiting her contact with the outside world and wearing out the hand soap.

She isn't laughing at it.

The craziest part is they're worried about stroke boy lol (me)

I think the pooh-poohing, especially for political reasons because certain people don't want to look inept, is certainly inappropriate.

However, poking fun at over-reactions and the generally strained relationship Americans have with science, and actions based on it, serves a useful purpose.

Could not agree more. My definition of the "typical science reporter, either on TV or in a Newspaper" is "Ah s/he failed high school biology and took up newspaper/TV journalism because of the lack of rigor in those fields."

I have had too many "run-ins" with so-called science reporters during my years at NIH when the "publicity folks" wanted to "trot out a tame scientist" that after the third time, I was crossed off their invitation lists!! Always a problem when the science does not match the "journalist's preconceived ideas!!" Dave_n

Y'all can freak out if you want to. My understanding is similar to Rastoff's. If you're not in a high risk category, it's about as bad as other viral respiratory infections (flu). With 7 kids in 4 different schools it's only a matter of time before I'll have to take the Immune Challenge.

I'm not gonna fret about it.

You can now return to your regularly scheduled state of panic.

You need to do some serious reading about this virus, it is not just another flu. You have a number of very uninformed opinions

Looking at the numbers, if true, it's not as bad as the media is selling.

While it may or may not be the same as the flu, I'll be taking the same precautions as I normally do with immunocompromised folks - I'm a caregiver to my 88 year old mother who has a autoimmune disease and is being treated with immunosuppressants(sp) - that's being clean and avoiding others as much as possible. Being clean is the most important, IMO. Realistically, that's about all I can do.

The numbers are a conservative guess being pushed by a re-election campaign that's hoping for the best.we really don't know how many undiagnosed carriers are out and about spreading it. The average carrier feels fine for five days or more and infects quite a few people before feeling sick. That's where the main problem lies, the potential for overwhelming our healthcare system is very real. I think the naysayers on this forum need to start talking to people who actually work in healthcare to get an understanding of where this may go.
