CS40 Recoil Spring Question

No nothing new to report. But….

A couple of years ago I started pondering this problem. I have a bag full of new recoil springs including CS40/45's. I didn't want to get a bunch of negative responses from those that really do know much more than me. I never mentioned my thoughts.

It "seems" at least to me that the outer spring from the .45 compact double sprung/nested springs would work. One of the new outer springs seemed a bit stiff and the inner seemed a bit light.

I really think that the outer of the double sprung compact .45's will work in the CS40/45's. They both have the same number of coils and are the same length.

I was under the impression that the CS40/CS45 were flat wire - now i will have to go check. But as to equivalence assuming the length and number of coils are the same, the other factors determining spring constant are coil diameter and wire shape/dimensions - with wire shape and dimensions being critical.

Well it seems that the CS40 I got had the recoil spring changed out with one that wasn't original. I didn't change it out because it looked brand new as did the pistol. It actually functions perfectly although it's most likely an outer intended for a double sprung .45.

Of course the originals were flat wire, (and much shorter than the "outies.") I'm not sure why I didn't notice that to begin with and then go on to say what I did as true/factual.

Even though the longer round wire one works I just changed it out with the correct CS one. Sorry I added misinformation.

Back to the original issue of finding more correct CS recoil springs.

I've been looking over several threads, but haven't been able to find a consensus on a substitute for the S&W CS40/CS45 factory recoil springs, which seem unavailable. I recently purchased a 945-1 with the 3.25 inch barrel. After lubricating it, I fired a few rounds through it. It functioned flawlessly, but I suspect the recoil spring is original and would prefer to replace it before firing the pistol again. Any thoughts on springs for this pistol or the CS40/CS45 would be greatly appreciated!

Here is the thread you need. You must skip down well into the thread to find the part about the springs:
CS40 added to the collection (last content added: alternate recoil springs tested)
Let us know what you think!
Kind regards,

Thanks! I somehow missed the later posts from Bluedot37. I have a set of the nested springs I can try, and will order a Wilson Combat spring to try as well. The information and work from the other members here is greatly appreciated - it would be a shame to not use a fine pistol because factory recoil springs are no longer available!
