Current Ammunition Situation

oh I hope so. I'm a wheel gun man, and somehow there's a box of 50 357 SIG in my safe.

every time I open the door I'm embarrassed, shatterpated, and humulgomated. what to do?

guess I'll save it for barter purposes. out here in the inland empire.

The new gun owners have bought 1 box of ammo for their "new" guns, fired 3 rounds, have either 17, 22, 47, or 97 rounds left in the box with one loaded mag. They feel safe, protected and happy. When some one kicks in the door, they will soil their shorts while trying to load the gun, and quickly pass on. I have talked with several of them.

It is basic math: "I own a gun and bullets." = "I am safe."
Ammo is very expensive, not readily available, so I don't shoot any more ammo.

Time to invite a new gun owner out to the range and then offer to introduce them to reloading. This is an *amazing* opportunity for those of us who want there to be more knowledgeable and responsible gun owners in the population and while it might represent an increase in ammo prices in the short term it is likely to help our rights and reputation in the long run. It does mean we need to step up and fill the gap left by industry and traditional advocacy groups (looking at you NRA) not keeping up with the situation. So, range day!

Stopped in Academy Sports in Brunswick, Ga. on way home. They had lots of ammo including over 2000 rounds of Remington 9mm in a plain brown box with black print. $19/ box....

I talked to a technician at Starline about 50/70 brass. We talked a bit about the shortage, he mentioned that as far as stuff like 50/70 they don't even have a date for production scheduled. There was a large military contract that took up a good bit of their time, but they are getting back into business as Covid restrictions abate.

HMMMM every time you hear the conspiracy theories are a hoax the more you learn, the more you find out they are true.

Between My LGS, Midway, family, and Bass Pro Shop online, I have been able to keep up with reloading supply's. On 22's in the last month I have been able to pick up 2,000 rounds from CCI (1500 standard velocity-500 Stingers). And over 800 from federal.

Last night I heard on the radio that commodity copper had past it's all-time high. As countries build out infrastructure and accommodate the shift in energy generation away from fossil fuels they are going to need a LOT of wire.
Not bad news for those of us shooting lead in reused cases, but factory ammo... well let's just say I expect to see more steel cases.

Steel is up too. All commodities are on fire!

HMMMM every time you hear the conspiracy theories are a hoax the more you learn, the more you find out they are true.

So what exactly is the conspiracy here? That the Government buys ammo? That the manufacturers prioritize huge contracts? My friend in the food service industry says they can't get aluminum foil because the Government is buying it all up so there won't be any around to make hats. And that's the truth!

On page one someone mentioned that copper had doubled in price. I decided to fact check that, and he's right.
52 week high....4.7620
52 week low.....2.3335
Current............4.6445
A great website that the gold and silver dealers use is Kitco.com
They have the current prices (up to the second) on all of the other commodities also.
As long as prices like this stay where they are ammo will never go back to pre Covid or Trump era pricing.

Hello All,
Had a very upsetting conversation with a buddy of mine today about the current ammo shortage/inflation situation we are all subjected to currently.
He seems to think that we are going to have to put up with this for close to a year before it get back to normal. By normal I mean the good ole days of $19 boxes of decent target ammo. :D

Does anyone here on the forum have a very educated opinion on just when we will be able to acquire ammo regularly and at a price that is not INFLATED?

I really would love to hear everyone's take on this, I need some good information because I am getting too lazy for all this tedious reloading business. Ha
Thanks
-Sam

When people stop panic buying. Not before.

It’s never going to be like before because ALL the manufacturers have raised their MSRP, copper, lead, brass, powder are all through the roof, and cheap places to buy are slowly dropping out of the ammo game.
Sure somebody, somewhere is going to find something cheap because it was in the pipeline but like I always say “someone is always going to win the lottery”.

What sucks,is finding ammo ,priced right.Your only aloud to buy 2 boxes ,that's it.Cant buy 2 boxes per caliber,I get why.But not worth the hassle of chasing, money, time, gas.

Stuff will not get as low priced as before. COMMODITY PRICES ARE WAY HIGHER. Availability will get better but prices will be higher. And it is happening now. My prediction is more ammo by July 4th. Prices not so good. Prices are already coming down on many places...but never to pre covid prices.
. .

I saw ammo in three different places this weekend. More than in the last year.

The Orlando gunshow yesterday had more ammo than I've seen in one place in a long time. Several vendors with multiple pallets, by the box or full cases. Prices were high but getting better. Joe

Just an observation, while looking at my email inbox today-

I'm continuing to get daily flurries of in-stock notifications; the prices are inching lower (I now see steel-cased 9mm under 50 cents); and the messages are shifting from "We've Got Ammo!", to -literally- "We've Got Ammo, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?"

Several sites that never offer free shipping historically, are now sending me free shipping codes.

Based on this, my updated prediction- by the end of the year, prices will be way down. I suspect steel cased 9 will be under 30 cents, maybe the same for steel 223. I think 7.62x39 will be down to around 25 cents or lower (which just about qualifies for "back to normal").

maybe off-topic a bit, but: are people buying the Tula we see everywhere, or is it just "there"? Just how much ammo do they pump out in a year?
For what it's worth, the stuff I picked up goes bang just fine. It ain't as pretty as brass, but it hasn't hurt my guns.

I think part of it is the behavior of people during shortages.

The self-reinforcing cycle of hoarding. Shortage causes panic, people buy up more than they need, shortage worsens, panic increases.

And then there's the resellers. I got the impression that a lot of people are buying them up at big box stores at current retail prices, and then selling them on GB. For example, Bass Pro is letting club members buy 8 boxes at a time. And then I saw GB listings of their store brand (Herter's) being sold in lots of 8 boxes. Or maybe that's a coincidence?

Kind of like those people filling up gas on the east coast, with plastic bags and laundry hampers.
