Cylinder Stop Screw Replacement on S&W Victory Model Revolver (K Frame 5 screw) need

As the title says Cylinder Stop Screw Replacement on S&W Victory Model Revolver (K Frame 5 screw) need help; I made the mistaken of removing the screw that is in the front of the trigger guard on the subject revolver. I can't figure out the secret to get it back in. There is a spring inside and plunger and it is under spring pressure. I can't get the screw started again and I am tired of crawling around of the floor looking for said parts (at least a dozen times so far) and risking scratching the pristine finish as the screw driver slides off the tiny screw.

Do you need to take the cylinder stop out first to do it?

bachmanw, Welcome to the Forum. The above video should answer your question. I believe your problem is just getting the screw to thread back in, so be sure there's no damage to the threads, and trial & error should work. Ed

No, the cylinder stop goes in first.
You might find it useful to use a small pocket type screwdriver- one that is short enough to push on with your index finger while turning it with your thumb and 2nd finger. It doesn't have to be a great hollow ground screwdriver.

Make sure the hole, threads, and plunger are clean.
Point the hole up.
Push the plunger and spring in as far as possible. Use a plastic spray tube if needed- like the one that comes with spray oil.
Set the screw in.
Locate the slot with the screwdriver and push gently.
Turn the screw BACKWARDS (left) a little ways to make it align itself, then turn right and see if it grabs.
If not, twist left and right in increments, gently, while pushing gently, till you align the start of each thread, male and female.
Once started, use a better screwdriver to tighten it.

I figured it out! Self inflicted!

I figured it out! I had the plunger and screw in reverse position! Thank god for exploded views! The plunger is closest to the cylinder stop and the spring is closest to the screw. Important lesson don’t try to put things back together at 11PM when you are tired. It was putting too much pressure on the spring and I could not get the screw to seat. Now it works perfectly.
I did have to take the cylinder stop out to get the spring out and get it and the plunger back in the correct orientation.

Thanks everyone for your help.
Bill
