Hi
I have a S&W model 14-4 that needs a cylinder replacement. Cylinders from which S&W models are compatible with my gun? Will cylinders from model 15 be compatible with mine? What fitment problems should be considered when installing non original cylinders? Is special gunsmithing required?

I'm new to this forum. All responses will be greatly appreciated.

THANKS!!!!

Quick answer - Best to replace with a cylinder of same model and dash. Cylinders from different models can have diameter issues. The "star" which is the extractor has "teeth" ratchets which are cut to work with the hand that turns the cylinder. You could get lucky but likely not without some smithing knowledge.

Close to year of manufacture may be better. But, you should be OK with any of the K frame 38 special cylinders that have the gas ring on the cylinder. I find that the length of the yoke tube and depth of cylinders center hole is more apt to be an issue than timing. If it the cylinder closes up when slid on the yoke WITHOUT the rod installed and yoke is installed frame check for excess end shake which can be fixed with shims, If it will not close your yoke tube is a bit long for the depth of your cylinders center hole. The end of tube needs trimmed, but it must be done so it will remain dead flat and square. I have also seen where the gas ring is a tiny bit long and rubs where it meets the yoke. Once it closes with out the ejector rod, install the rod assy and check ejector rod length to make sure tip of rod is able to move past lug under barrel. Now check carry up to make sure cylinder locks up before hammer falls in DA.

My previous attempt

Thanks for the excellent information. I previously tried a cylinder that I purchased online for a model 14-4 like mine. I used the cylinder with all my original cylinder parts. When closed, the cylinder locked in place too tightly. Was unable to cock the hammer. It was just locked up. No movement in double action mode either. The new cylinder that I used looked to be as good as new. Was really disappointed that it wouldn't work.

Cylinder replacements typically involve fitting, sometimes extensive fitting, to work properly and safely, even between the same model dash numbers. This is especially true of the older revolvers like the model 14 you have.
Many of the parts, including the hand, yoke, front locking bolt, and the extractor rod are individually fit when the revolver is constructed. These assemblies are not "drop ins" and are rarely interchangeable without some degree of hand fitting.

The model 14 cylinder you previously purchased can likely be fit to your gun by a trusted and properly trained local gunsmith.
