I had the opportunity to try and mow the yard today while it was reasonably dry in between rain showers earlier this week and forecasted rain later this evening. Our "yard" that I mow with a mower about 4 acres and takes a couple of hours or so on the Kubota zero turn. I had finished the back half of the yard and came up to the driveway and stopped to go inside and get a bottle of water. As I got off the mower I noticed a pile of sticks next to the driveway.
Inside, Mrs. Faulkner was drying off some dishes she had just washed, and as I went to get my bottle of water and I asked her, "why is there a pile of sticks next to the drive way?"
"Daisy put them there," she answered.
As I twisted off the bottle cap asked, "and whyyyy did Daisy put them there?"
"I told her to."
I took a long pull on the cold bottled water, and then waited for more of an answer. Apparently there wasn't going to be more without pulling it out, so the next question was obvious.
"Okay, I'll bite," I said, "why did you tell her to?"
"Well," she said, "while you were mowing out back I went outside to take a few pictures of the baby bluebirds that are starting to stick their heads out of the birdhouse. Daisy came over wanting me to play and I kept telling her no while I was watching the bluebirds. Finally, she got the hint that I wasn't going to play with her so she meandered off. When I got finished taking pictures I walked back to the driveway and she came up looking kind of pitiful because you were mowing and I wouldn't play with her."
"So, to give her something to do I told her, 'Daisy, go get a stick' and she ran out into the yard by the maple trees and found a stick and brought it back to me. I took it from her and told her to go get another one. When she went to get another one I just dropped the first one on the ground. She came right back with another stick instead of giving it to me she dropped it by the one I dropped. I told her to go find another stick and off she went. I had my camera with me so I started taking pictures of her and, well, the next I knew she had gathered a pile of sticks."
At least it saved me from having to go pick them up from around the yard before I mowed.
