I have a 686 i bought from gun brokers a few years back its a pre lock gun and was wondering if any one could tell me when it was made AFJ85XX also has a M over the mod. 686. I thank you for any help.

late 1984. The M means it was sent back to Smith & Wesson for a recall. The recall was for the firing pin bushing to be replaced.

Not to hijack the thread. I have a Supica&Nahas S&W book, but I have a question on a 686 no dash, serial number. AAL 14XX. If AAAXXX was the first series 1980, AAD 2120 1981, AAF Oct 1982, when was the AAL produced?

Probably Nov. of 82. The book doesn't have all the letter combos and sometimes you have to go with a SWAG. HTH GB

Yup! Scientific Wild ***ed Guess!

AAF = Oct. of 82 and ABL = Dec. 82. AAL falls between those numbers, ergo, must be Late Oct. or Nov. of 82. I own a couple different guns that don't have the code dates in the book. Sometimes you just have to wing it... HTH

According to the BOOK, BHE = March 1991 ship date.

Since we are discussing everyones manufacture dates.LOL My ser# prefix is AAK47XX on my 686. What should i guess?
