I always liked the Dean Martin Show when I was a kid. He had a weekly skit where he would open a door, with a "mystery guest" behind it. He also had some rock acts on there, and of course he would make fun of the way they looked. I liked some of the movies, too. I like him in Bandolero, with James Stewart, and a young, very hot Raquel Welch. First time I remember seeing someone cocking the SAA using the weight of the barrel for leverage.

Dean and my wife were both born in Steubenville, Ohio.

Steubenville was named after Baron von Steuben, of Revolutionary war fame.

Steuben is actually pronounced "Shtoyben," as it's a German name.

Steubenville is pronounced "Stoobenville," as Americans have never taken much trouble to learn the German language and its oddball ways of pronouncing things.

I might note that my wife was born quite a bit after Dean.

I give Lewis a ton of credit for his fundraising. As a comedian/actor I thought he sucked duckweed.

Apparently his ego wouldn't fit in only one time zone at a time. The fact that so many of the French consider him a genius completely baffles me.

But I liked Martin, though I saw very little of his movie work.

He was a loyal friend, when the Studio fired Marilyn Monroe while filming "Something s got to Give", rather than film it with another actress he resigned also.

Always liked him.

I remember seeing all of what film remained of the unfinished "Something's got to give" on some TV program about Marilyn. She was totally horrible in it, like she was drunk or drugged up - maybe both. The movie would have needed to be completely re-shot, and it wouldn't have been the same without the usual Marilyn performance. She got fired mainly because she never showed up on set.

I have and still watch several of the rat pack movies. Frank and Dean were great together in comedy or heavy drama. Some of the good movies were:
.Four for Texas featureing Joey Bishop Ursula Andres, Anita Ekberg, Charles Bronson and Victor Buono. Great cast and movie.
.Oceans eleven with all the rat pack. Frank, Dean, Sammy, Peter Lawford, Joey Bishop, Cesar Romero. When the entire rat pack got together for a movie You could count on it being good every time.
.I think my favorite movie with Frank and Dean was a straight up drama with no singin' and no comedy. Shirley McClain gave the performance of a life time. Some Came Running. For all their other spectacular talents these guys were both VERY talented dramatic actors.

Four For Texas is a classic-also had the Three Stooges in it. Sooon as Warner Bros emailed me they were releasing is on MoD--I bought a copy.

I read his "drunk" act was just an act until his son-a AF National Guard pilot-died in a crash.

It was largely an act, but he was a drinker. I don't know what happened to him after his son was killed. When on stage, he often carried a glass in his hand with what looked like whiskey in it. It was actually tea.

Most know that Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis made a string of stupid comedy movies together in the 1950s, and those which I have seen have been eminently forgettable. Probably the worst was one called "Three Ring Circus" with, of all people, Zsa Zsa Gabor. I never particularly liked Jerry Lewis, but he did an outstanding job in at least one of his movies called "Hook, Line, and Sinker" which is honestly funny on a higher level and is not to be missed whenever it shows up on TV. Not the typical slapstick Jerry Lewis comedy (although it has a little), but actually a semi-intelligent performance.

Foster Brooks was a regular on the Dean Martin Show, and he used to crack me up no end. He played the confused drunk role to perfection, although I understood that he was a teetotaler. No one has been his equal doing that since.

I post this because it is Dean Martin's 100 birthday tomorrow.
Also quite a big centennial birthday celebration , next weekend in Steubenville.

I enjoyed Dino's show as a kid.

My SIL gives me some kind of DVDs as a Christmas gift every year. Over the years she's given me the entire Bond collection, the LOTR trilogy, the Star Wars collection, the Carol Burnett Show set, and last year a 6-disk set of the Dean Martin Show.

So far I've only watched two of them - because I'm savoring them.
