Im very new to things, and I know this is a Smith and Wesson forum, however, I am in a delimma. I have two guns I can purchase, one being a DPMS LR308 and the other being a MP10. Both are brand new, and both would only cost me 800. Is there alot of upside to the MP10? I hear good things about it, but Id like to hear some feedback(persuasion) on why I should go with the MP10. Also, what should be the first modifications I should do with it. I also understand that I am a noobie to this type of thing, but forgive me, Im young, so flame on, and thanks for the replies!

obvious stuff

well, you are asking in a S&W forum, so the answer to which gun is the M&P-10 of course!

That said you should read through some of the other threads on here for good and bad stuff. In general the good stuff is that it is reasonably accurate and the price is in the proper range. On the bad side it has trouble with some ammo feeding properly, CBC in particular seems to be really bad, and it has some parts that are proprietary to S&W. I'm not sure in general how standard the other manufacturers of AR-10 type rifles are either, it seems like there are more variations than are seen in AR-15 clones. Also since the M&P-10 is relatively new on the market the accessory makers are just getting out parts that are made to fit it... for instance a good quad rail handguard was just finally shipped that was listed in the S&W accessory book a year ago, there is a thread about those within the last week or so. Magazines had been hard to find and some were of poor quality in the beginning, i think that has improved now. But others are finding that some after market charging handles don't fit the proprietary S&P bolt carrier, and there have been long discussions of buffer tubes, springs, buffer weights, and spacers needed if you try to change the stock for one with a different tube.

Personally I went with removing the Mass required fixed stock by drilling out the pin and adding only the adjustable part to the existing tube which is working fine. I changed the handguard for an moe one that i didn't care much for but fit, but have now gone with the new quad rail that just came out and am much happier. A sling, scope, and bipod/folding front grip complete the setup. The one thing I would recommend is to get one without the fixed front sight on the gas block if you can. That makes setting up optics easier and you can always add flip up iron sights to a rail if you want them.

+1 on what was said, I did try (handle not shoot) the DMPS (not sure which model but their basic one) LR-308T.. alot heavier and in terms of quality my choice was the M&P 10. Cons for me compared to 5.56 is recoil in terms of follow-up shots which I plan to address by adding compensator (Battlecomp BABC), and the magazine that came with it is for show only (***!)

Accurate, ambi controls, quality product, reliable (+400 rounds), and well priced, lifetime warranty from a company that's been around more than DMPS.

DPMS is the Taurus, Century Arms, Larsin, Gennings, Llima, of AR style rifles (there are a few others that belong in that group too)

looks like its been covered, I paid a great deal more than 800 and I would go the M&P route again.
Nothing HAS to be done, but clean it well out of the box and run it wet for a while...
as for mags, Magpul P-mags all the way, I understand the 10 rounders are shipping now (if that's of interest)
I added a free-float hand guard, a fixed rifle length stock, and increased the BCG weight to smooth out the cycle, but none of these things are needed for this rifle to run

Either at that price.... or both! There is nothing wrong with the DPMS. To step up in quality, price doubles. Smith's standard factory triggers are about the best I have felt but I always upgrade to a good two stage.

I would replace the stock with something like a Magpul UBR first.
