Deeper primers

Anyone know how to set your primers 0.005" below the head of the case using a Dillon 650 press?. The primer punch installs the primers flush with the button of the case head. There is more travel available on the punch and the case primer pockets measure about 0.010 deeper than the primer length. I assume the primer punch must be slightly oversize to the primer pocket so that the travel stops at the face of the primer head. Does Dillon make a modified primer punch or has anyone ever tried changing the punch on a 650 the set the primer at 0.005 below the head?

Just speculating since I can't look at your individual machine.
Suggest checking the following:
The punch should be the correct one for the primer size (large or small). The shellplate should be clean and the shellplate bolt tight so the plate does not tilt when priming. My Dillon will seat the primer all the way to the bottom of the pocket, provided the primer pockets are clean (usually .001 or .002 low). Check cases and clean primer pockets as needed.

Primers need to be seated firmly to the bottom of the primer pocket. The depth of the pocket and the height of the primer determine its relatlionship at or below the head of the case. You should be able to feel the primer seat and bottom out though its a bit more dificult with a progessive press that has lots of things going on at the same time.

If not seated to the bottom of the pocket and firm enough to give the primer a proper "set" you may get missfires. Seating to a predetermined depth is pointless unless each case has an absolutely uniform pocket depth and the primer seats firmly to the bottom.

You might check your Dillion owners manual, I believe if you remove the primer seating stud for cleaning, it gives a figure for reassembly using a set of calipers to get the right height on the primer seating stem. My manuals out in the garage or I would check it myself. If I am guessing right you could set it a little higher or lower than their figure to get what you want.

your primer seat may be set too low on your primer slide.

I have gone through this same thing wih Dillon and they dont make a primer seating stem/assembly that will do this.Randy Lee with apex tactical suggest to seat the primer and then rotate the shell casing 1/2 turn and reseat,according to Randy he is able to seat primers about 6 k.It works but is time consuming.
