Um..... Apparently it actually started because a Colts player wanted a souvenir ball after he intercepted a pass.

The balls were either under-inflated or (more likely) deflated.
Somebody in or close to the Patriots club broke the rules.

I had no opinion on this until I heard Tom Brady's reply to the question: "Are you a cheater?"

Now, that's a very direct question which calls for a yes-or-no answer. But instead of saying "No.", Mr. Brady replied "I don't think so.", which means he thinks the question is a matter of opinion. Not a good answer, and definitely NOT what he would have said if he was innocent.

Here's another thought: This man throws footballs for a living, and has done so for many years. I cannot buy the idea that he doesn't know what a properly-inflated football feels like, versus an under-inflated one.

I think he knew darned right well what the pressure in those footballs was...

If you actually read the rule it states:

" The Referee shall be the sole judge as to whether all balls offered for play comply with these specifications. A pump is to be furnished by the home club, and the balls shall remain under the supervision of the Referee until they are delivered to the ball attendant just prior to the start of the game."

So they presented the balls for inspection, which everyone agrees they did.
And the balls were accepted by the referee, which everyone agrees they were.
Therefore, the balls were legal for play as approved by the sole judge of compliance in full accordance with the rules.
