did i get ripped off

Been there done that (too many times!!!). Never again. This forum is a great wealty of information. Start educating yourself now for your future purchases. BTW, my last purchase was a factory nickeled Model 15 and I love it.

I just checked Gunbroker, and $500 for a nickel Model 15 does not seem to be too far out of line, especially if you consider shipping and FFL costs.

(I'm assuming the Model 15 in question is indeed nickel, not "cromed.")

I paid $350 for my wife's near mint blued M15. Felt fortunate to get it.

Seems like you paid a little more than necessary. On the other hand, you would have paid more for a new gun not as good as the one you bought.

I wouldn't lose much sleep over it.

Welcome S&W 38 to the best forum IMO, though I'm biased!

I agree with Photoman44's statement 100%!!!
Mine is a great shooter that I've had for 33 years and is still going strong.

Shoot it, enjoy it and don't look back.

If it's a minty nickel 15 you didn't do too bad. Now if those are your pictures and you spent more than $5 for your camera, then you got ripped off on the camera, Shoo

Believe me, it won't be long before we consider a $500 M-15 a genuine bargain. You just bought a bit early.

I've seen many people pay too much for crappy firearms.

You paid a little too much, but you got a great, classic revolver.

That's not so bad. Go shoot and have fun. Then it's all good.

It's all about timing and perspective - case in point: I have a lightly used S&W 4006 with the original box, wrapping paper, tools and documents. A few months ago, I was trying to assess the market for this piece and the vast majority of those I showed it to turned their noses up and said (and rightly so) that the market was glutted with police 4006 trade-ins. The best offer I could get was $300.00. I went to a local gun show last Sunday and just for kicks, put the 4006 in my bag as trading material. As the "loaded gun checker" (he wasn't an LEO) was going through my bag and checking my guns, he opened the gunny sock that the 4006 lives in. I swear you would have thought that he had pulled Excaliber from the stone. He looked at me and asked "...are you going to SELL that Smith?" I said, if the right deal comes my way, yes. Well, the moment passed, and the 4006 didn't make it back out of the bag. What a difference a few months makes, huh?

Regards,

Dave

What is done is done. Your choice is to either worry about having paid too much or just enjoy a nice new gun. I would recommend the second choice. It's only money and it's not like you spent the money on DVD's/CD's/electronic stuff, etc. that is nearly worthless as soon as you take it out of the store. A nice gun is always worth something.

Welcome to the forum,
It being a former police revolver makes it a cool find. DID YOU PAY TOO MUCH..well who cares as long as you are happy....It happens. If you are interested in revolvers and are going to start buying more, come talk to us that is what we are here for. Find some one from the site in your area and hook up with them. I am sure they would be glad to go with you to help you find some good deals.

I've said it before..I "often" go to a crappy chain restaurant and spend more than $100 on dinner and drinks.

Welcome to the forum. I don't know if you paid too much or not. The pics are too fuzzy to tell. However, if you are happy that is all that counts. I'd like to see better pictures if you have the chance. Enjoy your revolver!

Look at it this way. What else can you buy for that amount that you, your kids, and grand kids can enjoy at the same time or through the coming decades.

I'll bet your $35K car won't last that long.

If you're happy with what you got, that's what matters. It was probably a bit steep but what counts is how you feel about it.

Welcome to the Forum...

I was with DPD in the 1970s and 80s... My issue gun was a M64 but I was able to trade it in for a M15 like yours but it was blue. My mistake was not realizing I could take the gun with me when I left because I had more than 10 years on the job.

To make it look more like an original factory nickel, pull out the hammer and trigger and replace them with the original case hardened parts. For some reason when people have a blue S&W nickeled the platers also do all the internal parts...that is the first clue that it was a non factory job. Second always look for the "N" stamped on the grip frame under the left grip panel.

If you want to gain some of the value of the gun back then see if you can get a letter from the officer who owned the gun or from his family if he is dead. His name, age, dates he worked for DPD and HIS BADGE NUMBER would increase the value of the gun especially if you pass the gun on to someone.

If you can find out the officers name but can't find him, go over to the DPD Museum and talk to Jesse Lucio. I used to work with him and last I knew he was still the curator there.

Hope this helps...Bob Makowski
