We've had a series of break-ins and assualts along a certain street in the historic part of my home town. There have been over 15 night and daylight burglaries. In 3 cases women were assualted. In one incident a woman returned home to find the guy in the house. He smacked her around and ran off with her purse. The next week he broke into another home in broad daylight with a woman home. When she stated that she didn't have any money he tried to rape her. She managed to fight him off. A reporter did a story after that one and asked a nearby lady homeowner, whose name he printed, if she was scared. He quoted her as saying "Am I scared? I'll tell you, I have a Smith & Wesson 38 Special with a laser sight. I'm ready." Now, the ace reporter mention the block the woman lived in. I simply opened the phone book and found her name was listed along with her address. I mulled that over in my head all night and told my wife the next morning that I had to call her. She warned me not to. I said I wouldn't want a daughter or sister to be in danger and somebody needs to talk to her. I finally called and she was a little skittish at first. I identified myself and spelled my name for her. After a few minutes I was a little relieved to know that she actually had some training from a well-known police officer/NRA instructor and actually practiced. Then I told her the real reason I called was because of how her quote in the paper sounded. I said if you have a sick dude who majors in burglary and minors in rape you don't make statements that sound like, "Ha. I'll bet you can't get me." She got real nervous and said she didn't mean it that way. Amazingly, the next day she was featured on local TV! They showed her face and her house. She even pulled out her little 642 and displayed it. What the heck is going on! Is she dilusional? What do you think?

DO NOT EVER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, TALK TO THE PRESS ABOUT ANY SUBJECT.

DO NOT LET THEM PHOTOGRAPH OR VIDEO YOU.

THAT GOES TRIPLE FOR ANYTHING RELATED TO FIREARMS.

When will people learn?

Yessir. Most "news" reporters are in the same category as politicians and child molesters.

Speaking of the news media. Have you ever been at the scene of a crime or some sort of disaster and then watch the TV news to see the report on it? The couple of times that I have it was like I wasn't even in the same state at the time. If I hadn't recognized the pictures I would have thought they were reporting on something totally different than what actually took place. Names were screwed up and how it actually happened wasn't even close. If they screw up what I saw on just two occasions then I can just imagine how accurate they are on other things that I see on TV.

I have never seen the media get it right yet.
Their a bunch of buffoons

Evidently you don't have to have a really high IQ to get into journalism school.

That sure is the case these days. I think Fox News is recruiting high school sophomores.

Today all they care about is having a sensational story.....and some people are stupid enough to help them out.

Bad idea.

+2

I don't know that she issued a challenge but I think what she said and did for the camera was dumb...really dumb.

Years ago my wife worked on an ambulance crew. One time she responded to a scene where a 5 year old boy had been mauled by a dog. The news crew showed up to do a story. When they found out that the dog in question was a Lab and not a Pit Bull, Rottweiller, or Doberman, they changed their minds and left without doing a story.

"If it Bleeds, it Leads!!!" and "Sex Sells" are still the watch words of the media AHs.

Better advice has never been printed in this forum!

NEVER SPEAK TO THE MEDIA.....
Learned the hard way years ago. I didn't even recognize "my" story when they were done with it.

You know there are many, many people who cannot encounter any other person without blabbing on forever about everything they know and everything that they only think they know.

As a former crime reporter I can tell you we aren't all idiots. I covered crime in a heavily gang-infested area and did a lot of stories on both victims and self protection methods. Since I was never unarmed I certainly never suggested someone else shouldn't be.

To print someone's name and street in a story like that is criminally stupid and irresponsible. The story would have been fine but for those details (and obviously no pics).

Sadly there are too few reporters out there who grasp security issues and the "crime reporters" these days are more worried about trying to find the cops doing something trivially wrong than covering crime

I write letters to the Editor and that is my dealings with the press. I learned a long time ago you will get the shaft more often than a kiss with the press.
