Well, yes they do. I can say this from personal experience. In the mid 1950s, Dad and I would drive up on Cave Creek Road from Phoenix to Lookout Mountain, located way north of Phoenix, where we would do some shooting. Along this curving road was a gas station owned by a fella named Charley Abels, a WWI veteran. It was a small station, but it had a star attraction. There was a donkey named Jimmy tethered there, and Jimmy's main trick was drinking beer out of a bottle which he could hold in his teeth and empty into his mouth. Charley would charge a buck or two, provide the beer, decap it, and let you give it to Jimmy. I don't know who enjoyed it more - the beer giver or the beer drinker.
Recently, I was reading a book about Mr. Abels, the title of which is The Last of the Fighting Four. It's a book about four brothers who fought the Germans with the First Infantry Division in France during the first big fracas. Charley survived the war (although two of his brothers did not), and traveled with his wife from Ohio to Arizona in a Model T Ford. The Arizona weather helped him to recover from sickness, and he started his little station and later became a Representative in the Arizona legislature.
In the book, and it jumped right out at me, was a picture of Jimmy the beer-drinking donkey, just as I remembered him. Do donkeys drink beer? You betcha! I remember giving him beer like it was yesterday!
Here's the picture in the book -
