a 646?

I've got a 5" Model 610 and a 3" M610 so does it make sense to add a 4" in .40 S&W?

My last new model Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt was a 7 1/2 incher. The reason for the purchase? It was the only standard production .45 Colt Blackhawk barrel length that I did not have. A good reason, perhaps, perhaps not, only you can put out that forest fire.

Really need....No

But I doubt that's the answer you were really looking for by polling a bunch of S&W enablers and encouragers . (Polling the right group is a slick way to get the answer you want...slick !)

So the real answer you want is ...My Goodness YES , a 5" 610 is a necessity of life....go get it !

Yes, you need a 646. Finding one might be a problem, though, unless you already have a line on one.

I ran across mine in a pawnshop in New Mexico. I didn't even know such a thing existed, but the price was right and I had a steady supply of .40 ammo from work, so I bought it.

It has become one of my favorite guns. I stocked up on Rimz moonclips, because the metal ones that came with it were difficult to load and unload. The Rimz are a breeze.

It is very accurate and I haven't had any issue with failures to fire with the Rimz, as some have reported with the metal ones (due to varying rim thicknesses with .40 ammo).

It does have pretty stout recoil, so I save the wood grips for show. With the rubbers on it isn't bad at all.

If you find one, I think you'll like it.

Thank you. Yes, I've got a line on one. Given the scarcity I figured I'd end up with it but from a practical standpoint I'm still trying to justify a dedicated .40 when I have two 10mm.

And it is an L-frame round butt with no lock, a titanium cylinder, and a frame mounted firing pin. Such a weird conglomeration of characteristics gives it a charm all its own.

You're comparing apples to oranges, I think you will like both...I do.
If you're looking for justification , how about....It's a really COOL gun in a neat caliber with a barrel length that is not often seen but was touted by many revolver men as being the best length.
Life's short , real short , get and enjoy it while you can !
I've passed up way to many deals that I now sorely regret, like a 41 magnum 3 screw Blackhawk for $75.00 . Opportunity doesn't knock twice !

If "need" governed purchasing guns I'd have been done buying decades ago. I can always come up with a reason for buying various guns, but it always boils down to simply wanting a particular gun. Some I searched for for years, others I didn't know I wanted until I stumbled across them. Until this post I never thought about a .40 revolver, but now if I stumble across one in my travels I'd seriously think about buying it. I certainly don't need it, but it looks like it would be fun to have.

Richard, you do not want to use the word "need" here in relation to firearms, but then yo figured that out already.:-)

If you shoot .40 in the 10 cylinder, you will get a dangerous amount of build up in the cylinders that you must remove before shooting the longer cartridges in again.
It will save wear & tear on your 10mm's.
It will continue to go up in value.
Set completion mentality dictates you will not be happy until you have them all.

Sorry if that seems dramatic, but you know you'll be happier with it, than without.

Thanks for coming to enablers anonymous, we're here to help.

Like everyone else said, what's need got to do with it; who needs to shoot auto cartridges in a revolver.... It's just fun.

As a friend I worked with years ago would have said, if you can afford it, want it, and like it what does need have to do with it? Remember it is the Bill of Rights not the Bill of Needs.

According to a magazine article I remember from 1969 or 70, there are 4 reasons for retail purchases:

1. Acquisition (Gotta get something new)
2. Pride of Ownership (Vanity)
3. Dreams and Imagination (i.e. Model 29/Dirty Harry)

4. Need
