Do you modify your firearm? why or why not?

If you travel back a few decades modifications were necessary for competitions like IPSC. So, I had some basic modifications done on a Series 70 and 629-1 to suit my needs. The Colt serves as my CC today.
Although I haven't done any altering since, I would not hesitate to do it again. Depends on the firearms' historical vs functional appeal as I see it. Resale value is only a minor consideration, if at all.

It's a matter of necessity, with that C-More optic, I can't grab the slide firmly enough to make for secure racking. (plus it makes "table starts" easier)

I went crazy one night and put a Talon grip on my Shield. I made sure the doors were all locked, and had all the lights off except one 60 watt bulb, in an interior room with that door locked!

Yes!! Mod it, I have a hard time not improving the firearm to enhance fit & function. My 9 has stippling, night sights, trigger work & top serrations. I'm very happy with it and wouldn't hesitate to put it up against anything else I have to defend myself and my family.

That being said, I haven't changed anything on my 45 Shield, yet, but I am already considering trijicon night sights.

My new .45 Shield will arrive at my FFL dealer tomorrow and I'm already thinking of an Apex trigger kit.

My MP might someday have to be used for defense. It is definitely going to be used to punch holes in paper. Therefore, it is primarily a target gun. The trigger mods help me get better groups. I keep the old parts, and if there is a problem, they are not that hard to replace. If I have to use it for self defense, and a lawyer attacks me for modifying the gun, that means I won, am still alive, and don't care a lot about the rest.

Apex trigger mods make the M&P's a better gun. As I see it, the only legal issue with trigger mods is in the event of an accidental discharge causing injury or damage.

Yeah, to Arizona some time after the election. My .45 should be broken in by then. I'm a Apex believer, having installed a trigger and FSS sear kit in my 9C.

Agreed - Apex is the bomb for the M&P shooter. I had an extra trigger on hand and installed it in my .45 a few days ago. Works like a charm.

i modify every ruger i get. i think they are poor out of the box.
even if it's just changing to a custom sear, i can make them better.

This goes for anything I buy. I suppose if I bought a Ferrari, Porsche, or Lamborghini, I'd leave them alone, but the first thing I do when I buy a new gadget\toy is take it apart and see what I can do to improve it (part of my nickname's philosophy). I have to laugh at purists who poo-poo on others who mod their stuff for functionality. I guess I could sympathize for bling bling mods but to each their own.

I do mods if they help the gun fit me better or in order to accomplish something specific. I decide if I feel I intend to keep it as to justify the added expense. For example, my shield has an apex kit, light polish, and xs big dot sights. As a cc firearm I wanted sights I could see fast and without my glasses . I did the apex trigger because I tried a mp core that had a better trigger and had to have it on my shield. It's a keeper.

I do not modify items I consider collector guns. I would rather cash out and buy what I want or wait until the funds are there. Tupperware on the other hand it's open season. Glock the finger grooves are gone, sights changed etc.

well....my 4 week old Shield 45 got a minor "adjustment" this morning.

The grip was too long for my hand and when I drew I fumbled to get a grip high on the backstrap.

So, Mr. Hacksaw removed the overhang at the bottom of grip....wallah !! perfect. Now its the same as my 9C and the heel of my hand naturally pushes my hand up high on the grip without fumbling. Feels great, draws quicker and points better.

My mod is usually a replacement Geissele trigger on my AR's. Occasionally I replace a stock. A scope and mount is a must on all my rifles.

Just an interesting thought.. My cousin is a retired LA County Sheriff's Dept. detective. I expressed to him my interest in doing a tigger job on my concealed carry S&W 642 DAO pistol. He advised me not to do so, because should I ever (God forbid) be involved in a self defense shooting, the investigation could go bad for me, having done anything to make the action easier to fire... I know that sounds a bit crazy at first, but we all know what an attorney could do with this...

I mod mine in any way I think they need. Sights are all set up for the same sight picture on every gun. Triggers get help if needed. I have actually made the triggers on both my M&P9c and wife's Glock 19 to be slightly heavier than stock. (BTW the Glock trigger is no where near as nice a design as the M&P IMHO). Grips get changed to make them feel better to ME.

Agreed......read it a million times but never heard of it occurring. If it's a good shoot, I'm guessing you could use anything legal.

Well if it needs ''something" to make a good short gun even better I will do it. Trigger work on S&W & Ruger revolvers, grip changes! . Some polishing and other tune up work on a semi auto, grip changes ETC.

Long guns some trigger adjustments if needed, some careful stoning of some moving parts, scope mounting. Mount a recoil pad! I tend to not do more than that to long guns as I really do not like guns that look like they have a companies catalog of items hanging all over the gun.(so called tactical guns) They tend to not balance right for me also! I guess for the most part I follow the KISS rule.

I have been shooting competitively since 1979. All S&W revolvers. I have built my own custom ones for over 30 years. I do not work on any one else's guns. Most of mine have 100% reliable 6 lb. DA, some have barrels I made from a blank, most of the iron sight guns have front and rear fiber optic sights that I make. Some are almost box stock. I have won many matches with modified guns to fit the situation. It all depends on what you want to use it for.
