I have a single action 2nd model 38. Serial number 970xx, Nickel, spur trigger, 4 inch barrel, finish is about 90%. I am looking a DOB and approx. value.

grey2393, I can't guess the DOB but Supica & Nahaus say $325 - 500 for Excellent. Mike

grey2393: The 3rd Edition notes that the .38 spur trigger 2nd Models were made between 1877 and 1891, with a serial number range of 1 to 108,255. Your .38 seems to be toward the later part of the run, probably in 1887-1888, would be my guess. I would letter it; S&W will have the date of manufacture. The 3rd Edition also says the pistol should be $325 for "Fine" and $500 for "Excellent, as mmaher94087 noted. I picked up a pair of these that lettered to 1885. Neat little guns, and you don't see a lot of them.

Hello,I have one of these ser#70976 and was wondering weather or not to shoot it with a modern 38 s/w load like a magtech 146 gr lrn.
The gun is very tight and locks up almost as good as some of my newer smiths.I don't have to shoot it,but it wood be nice just to see how it shoots. What do you guys think? Thanks,Jim
