Good morning, all.

I am in the market for an AR and prefer the rather retro look of the old M4s. The 6920 was initially at the top of my wish list but Colt has ceased sending the rifle with the detachable carry handle and changed the stock, neither of which beings me any sense of joy. While perusing various AR companies I discovered S&W's M&P15 SKU 811000. It has the exact look I want and some searching has uncovered a couple of decent deals. Groovy.

Might anyone be familiar with this model? If so, what are your thoughts and opinions?

Thank you much.

Hehe I actually like the colt 6920 model. Waiting for od green to get restocked by various companies before I order

You could always order a carry handle from a place like Brownells if you are really stuck on the Colt. Personally, I think you are paying a bit more for the name on the side but they are a good firearms maker.

The fact that Colt flirted with bankruptcy a couple times in recent years and lost its contract with the U.S. military to FNM, is what steered me away from Colt and toward Smith & Wesson. They'll probably be fine, but it was enough to sway me.

S&w revenues are down 20% this year. Is FNH going to be building the m16 m4 now?

Well...this stinks. I purchased three H&Ks during the rebate offer and just bid on a Colt 6720 on Gunbroker. I seem to be drawn to dark horses. Methinks I need to sell the H&Ks, pray someone outbids me on the 6720, then buy Glock pistols (forgive me, please, the M&P just isn't for me) and S&W rifles.

In a sad way, I suppose I am stuck on Colt. I think it's a mixture of nostalgia and the Colt name mystique. I refuse, however, to pay the prices the Colts seem to command when it isn't really as I think it should come. I bid on the 6720 as the price is relatively low right now. A couple of bids, however, and it will become more than I am willing to pay when I can get an S&W that is a dead ringer (sans markings and 14 inch barrel) for the M4 that I dearly love.

The Colts are going between $800 and $900 now, new.

I'm looking specifically for a 6920 or 6720. In this area you can't touch either for less than $950 and online isn't much better. If you know a dealer that has either model for under $900 I'd be very interested and extremely grateful. :-)

I was going to point him to grabagun.com as well, but the 6920 has jumped in price... so I looked at a few others that had the 6920 for $850 as recently as a month ago, and they have all jumped in price. Is the Colt going up due to the "bankruptcy", and folks think they are buying collectors pieces?

Found one under $900, but only by a penny!

Yeah I saw my of green one for 834. It's out of stock now : /

Watch Palmetto State Armory... They are out of stock now, but per another forum, the LE6920 was available yesterday for $799.

3 months ago I won a used 811000 on Gunbroker for $599. Another $50 shipping and FFL fee and it was in my hands. More than pleased with it.

Bought an 81100 three years ago. Was looking for a Sport but they were hard to find at the time, then I ran across this NIB 811000 for only $850. Wasn't looking for a model with the carry handle since I planned on putting an Eotech with a 6X magnifier to make it a midranged shooter, but couldn't pass it up for the price. Also replaced the for-end with a quad rail. Sooner or later, I might replace the stock.

It's been great, have not had any problems whatsoever, holds the zero on the Eotech very well, and I love the way it eats up and spits out any kind of 223/556 ammo, even the steel cased stuff.

At bottom is my 811000, at top is her little sister, MP 15-22......
