I just received an email from The White House regarding the President's response to a gun control petition. Does this resemble the Feinstein proposal or the other reteric coming out of DC?

Look, like the majority of Americans, I believe that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms. This country has a strong tradition of gun ownership that's been handed down from generation to generation. Obviously across the country there are regional differences. There are differences between how people feel in urban areas and rural areas. And the fact is the vast majority of gun owners in America are responsible -- they buy their guns legally and they use them safely, whether for hunting or sport shooting, collection or protection.

But you know what, I am also betting that the majority -- the vast majority -- of responsible, law-abiding gun owners would be some of the first to say that we should be able to keep an irresponsible, law-breaking few from buying a weapon of war. I'm willing to bet that they don't think that using a gun and using common sense are incompatible ideas -- that an unbalanced man shouldn't be able to get his hands on a military-style assault rifle so easily; that in this age of technology, we should be able to check someone's criminal records before he or she can check out at a gun show; that if we work harder to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people, there would be fewer atrocities like the one in Newtown -- or any of the lesser-known tragedies that visit small towns and big cities all across America every day.

Let's see, Prohibition a fine government idea turned out well.

The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was based on government lies.

They seem to be taking care of the last big storm that hit New York and New Jersey didn't they?

Is Homestead Fla totally recovered from the hurricane YEARS and YEARS ago?

Government looked after the American Indian for over a century didn't they, How's that working?

How's the WAR ON DRUGS DOING?

I thought the government was going to close GITMO.

The government needs to fix the debt and Social Security problem and leave the firearms to the citizens and the market place.

If politicians don't want fix the countries real problems, they should resign and go home.

This from the man who has stonewalled the congressional investigation into Fast and Furious, in which his Justice Dept and supordinate agencies facilitated the transfer of over a thousand "assault weaponds" to a Mexican drug cartel. The man whose State Dept and CIA were involved in gun running to Al Quida and other terrorist organizations in the Mid East. Something smells rotten.

I was just amazed that he continues to spew his campaign rhetoric. Maybe he really thinks he is going to do away with term limits. I have always said "if his lips are moving, there is a lie coming out"

Going back to your original post, what law would have kept those firearms out of Lanzas hands? And what law that would effect him, and not me? I've never done anything wrong, neither had he. Please explain how sensible legislation would have stopped that.

I received the same letter, a pity I wasted my time and effort. But I will continue the fight for our 2nd amendment rights.

First of all, murder is already illegal....

Second, I think the "gun debate" is a total mess anyway. Gun "rights" proponents love to cite statistics about gun ownership and crime, and talk about how "law abiding gunowners" don't murder or rob others, etc... Frankly, while it's all well and good, all this is entirely irrelevant.

It is rare indeed to hear a "gun rights spokesman" actually talk about RIGHTS, or....gasp!....fighting against a tyrannical central government!!! (though I will admit, I do hear it a LITTLE more now than I used to... but I think it's too little, too late.) Why, the mere mention of that would immediately draw shrieks of derision and laughter, as if tyranny is simply not possible! And these "gun rights spokesmen" are absolutely TERRIFIED of being labeled kook, or "conspiracy nut", "tin foil hat wearer", or whatever other ridiculous epithet the statists spew. Only the prospect of being called "racist" or "antisemitic" strikes more terror into the hearts of men.

No, the "gun debate" revolves around what guns our benevolent government should allow us to have, and what kind of compromises should be made, or how we need to enforce the gun control laws we already have, or what other laws should be written to outlaw something that is already illegal, or deciding which feelgood measures should be taken to keep "the wrong people" from buying these horrible weapons of mass destruction.

The enemies of Liberty control the "debate". Entirely. They control the terms. They control the positions. The control their sheepish opposition.

No legislation would have. Nothing that could be truly enforced. The real cause for why this was allowed to happen was with his mothers irresponsibility to have those guns not secured or with a lock on them. Pass all the laws they want but it still comes down to individual responsibility

"weapon of war" last time I was at my LGS, they didn't have any RPGs, Apache Helicopters, or heat seaking missles. AN AR-15 IS NOT A WEAPON OF WAR !!! The libs and thier f*#@ing labels ........

This is the same argument that was used in Australia to completely confiscate all the semi autos, pump shotgun etc... Reasonable restrictions, weapons of war, not used for hunting and have no purpose except for killing.

We all know the arguments. There is a whole generation out there that don't know these tools the gun banners use to evoke emotional responses. Look, we all knew this was coming the day this admin was reelected. Where were all those people that forgot to show up to vote. I'm not certain how the other candidate would have reacted to this incident, it is unclear but what is known is how the current occupant of the Office of The President was react. This admin was watching and waiting for an incident like this to take advantage of it to further their own ideological agenda.

If you've been around long enough you knew what the deal was when he appointed Joe Biden to head a task force to ban guns. Joe Biden was one of the authors of the original AWB and he led the charge against guns while he was Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee back in the 80's and early 90's. Biden met regularly with Sarah Brady and HCI to come up with ways for a complete ban on firearms ownership.

A firearms registration scheme that they will be pushing is nothing more that a road map on where to go when they completely ban private ownership and don't fool yourself or anyone else, this is the plan. I've been at this a long time as some of you here have been too so you know what I say is the truth. Do they have the votes now?

nothing new...it's 95% word for word what he said in the 2008 and 2012 debates.

I got around to watching the video that was attached to the same email. They must have realized most people that signed the petition would not want to watch Obama mouth the lie. I was under the impression the text above was from the video but that was not the case. He is very clear in the video that he intends to ban military style weapons and high cap mags.
