I have finally done what I thought was impossible, I have in my opinion the perfect smith and wesson. The look, the feel, and the shootablity is everything that I wanted and have been searching for. I'm a hard core .357 shooter and love the 686 frame, but last summer I put my hands on a S&W 627 performance center. It was love at first trigger pull, I was not sold on the unfluted cylinder or the Batnam grips but the trigger was great and who doesn't love a 8 shot revolver:cool:. So I set out on a quest to find one. The major problem is in order to get your hands one with a fluted cylinder you better have deep pockets if you can find one that someone wants to part with. As luck would have it I stumbled across a new one at the local gun shop. I had to have it, and I had to make look like that baddest gun at the range. I have a pretty good background in machining but I also have a friend who I think was born out of a bridge port mill:D. We came up with a plan to mill flutes in the cylinder. This is not a task for a shadetree machinist, S&W uses serious SS and it was a white knuckler the whole time. It turned out flawless, the next step was to get rid of the MIM parts DON'T WORRY I bought those. Then I bought a set of Nill Griffe grips. This is the results a "BEAST" for a CC gun I hope you like the pics I very proud of this one.

That looks seriously cool! Too bad that your warranty with S&W is surely null and void, but it sounds like you know some folks with skills to keep it running if you encounter any issues.

A snub PC 627 and/or 657 are at the top of my "next gun" list. Are you going to try to IWB carry, I hear that's no easy task with that wide N frame cylinder.

Nice job

Banger....
Your friend did a good job, from the pics it looks like your project came out well executed.

Curious, did you check with the factory before having the fluting done? The PC used to offer replacement fluted cylinders for a small price (part and labor).

Some years back, I had this an M610 that I turned into a "project" and researched having someone flute the cylinder, it was tough to find anyone who would take that on, but got in touch with Scott at SDM Fabricating and he fixed me up, not sure if he still provides this service but his work was fantastic. With cylinder and replacement 4" barrel in hand, I had the factory put it all together and bead blast the finish, for me it came out "just right" :)

Projects are fun, especially when you come out with something that the factory should have done in the first place.

Thanks to all for the replies to hkcavalier I have a lobo holster on the way so I never really planned for IWB this gun might be kind of a tank for that. To SmithNut thanks for awesome pictures, I did contact Smith and Wesson but do to what is going in Washington they are really backlogged and I was looking at a year or so for them to do the work. I know what I did killed the warranty, but I have confidence that it is a sound gun. Your M610 is something that I would like to take on next I would like to get a custom that I can hunt with, in Wisconsin you need a 5" barrel to hunt deer. I love the gold bead front sight that is a must for my next custom one.

Great looking gun and nice work. There is a lot to be said for having something special.
Thanks for sharing.

I sent mine back to Smith and they replaced the unfluted cylinder with a fluted one and sent it back with the original cylinder for a total of $214. It is one of my favorite guns, well, I have several favorite! :-)
