I just found out we will be having a new Dunham's store built onto an expansion at our mall. I've never been to one before, but I hear they sell guns and ammo. We have an Academy store about 2 miles away from the mall. Any Dunham's fans here, or critics? What kind of store can we expect when they finally open?

I can take it or leave it. It is the only "sporting goods store" within 50 miles of me that is not a mom and pop store. their prices on firearms are competitive, walmart beats them on ammo prices, as do most of the local ffls. Selection is lacking, but they seem to try to cover a little bit of everything for everybody.

Pretty indistinguishable from Academy . . .

Dunham's in Hastings is a total waste of time. it is in the old wally world building and the gun department such as it is is clear in the back corner(probably 300 feet). the two times I was in there the only people there were at the check stand at the front door. if you needed help you would have to walk all the way back up front to get them to come back and hopefully beable to help. I decided if I have to do that much walking to get help I was going to continue right back out the front door. not to mention they didn't have any reloading stuff

I am willing to wager that there is not a big box sporting goods store in the United States that has the gun department near the front door . . .

Their regular prices are nothing to brag about. However, their Sunday/Monday ad supplement that's in the Sunday paper, has good deals on ammo. You can usually find Rem/UMC 250 packs of 9mm for about $60; .40 S&W and .45 Auto have similar percentage reductions. Today, they have 1000 rounds of 9mm Rem for $230, not a bad price. They run Remington, Federal, or Rio shotgun shells for as little as $54/case. Those prices show up about every two weeks per brand.

have one here local, was in there several weeks ago shopping for a 1911 of some kind.
Clerk didn't know what I was talking about. Saw a couple of them I wanted to handle. The kid had to get a manager to unlock the case, then unlock the gun, and I had to give them my driver's license AND permit before I could touch the gun. Don't know if that is a company wide policy or just individual store. I won't bother again.

It isn't a new store, they have been in that mall for about 10 years.

They often did have 22lr when no one else did.

It's not company wide, or if it is, they don't follow it around here. Of course, in the county where the local Dunham's is located, if you don't have a gun when you move, they give you one.

Depends on the ammo. Online it's still cheaper. Range ammo is around $209 - $215 delivered

I worked at Cabela's in Kearney for a couple of years about 15 years ago and the gun department was about 50 feet inside the front door. before I left the gun department was moved but the reason was just that they needed a lot more room rather than any security reasons.

having the gun department upstairs and quite a ways from the front door didn't prevent Scheel's in Lincoln getting robbed of a lot of guns a few years back

So, I'm still winning, right?

(I don't think I mentioned the reason that I though that, did I?)

A Dunham's opened locally about a year ago.

I've been in a few times to look around, bought some winter gloves, but there is no one in the "Gun Department", any time I have been in.

I support my local gun shop.

Back during the ammo panic the local Dunham's often had ammo when
nobody else did. Not .22 but shotgun and centerfire rifle ammo.
Bought 20 and 12 gauge shells and slugs as well. Often beat internet
prices on slugs before hunting season.

I have looked at several guns at the local one but have not bought one there as yet. Came close with a Spanish surplus bolt gun in .308.
