Eagles

I've been watching off and on since just before the hatching.
The oldest (one day older) is really a bully! And eating those fish days after being brought to the nest. I guess they'll eat anything.

Their are several eagle cams and I enjoy watching them as well . . . thanks for sharing the link to this one.

We've got a nesting pair of eagles in a remote area on my neighbor's property. It's a short hike from our place and Mrs. Faulkner and I hike in for pictures from time to time. I took this one just a few weeks ago.

Lots of eagles up here. Saw 7 driving home from the VA in Sturgis. Feeding on road kill deer. Asked the local Guru of birds and was told that there are about 450 locals, and this time of the year 1000's of transients. See them around town sometimes. Absolutely magnificent.

Saw them in concert a few times, but not the same since Frye died...

But seriously, love the bird Eagles too. At our lake house, we've and got an eagle that'll perch way up on one of the trees on our property. He'll sit there and scout. It's an amazing sound when it takes off out of that nest to swoop down on a fish! You hear this long, slow, "whooop, whooop, whooop" of their wings flapping. They're killers when it comes to snagging those fish!

There is an eagle feeding frenzy during the autumn salmon run at Haines AK.

I was on the Chilkat River in 2017 to photograph the eagles. Also encountered my first grizzly bear in the wild on the Chilkat. Trumpeter swans also nest there.

My brother and I were out in the yard when an eagle flew over our heads toward Lake Erie. We watched the eagle lowering its talons like the landing gear on a plane as it swooped down toward the beach. The next thing we saw was the eagle flying straight up with a fish bent double in the eagle's talons. How cool was that?

We have 2 nesting pairs of Golden eagles on the bluff in front of the house.. We see them a lot Saw one yesterdayover the house at about 50 ft..Big birds. When I fished on the cheasapeake I fished near an Osprey nest on the Chester River. If I caught a perch or small bluefish the pair of ospreys would screech at you to let 'em have it. We usually cleaned our catch near the channel maker where they had their nest...we threw the heads etc to them...and part of the times an ol Bald eagle would swoop down and grab the parts. The ospreys would screech and chase the eagles...from behind. Lot of eagles on the rivers etc. I've seen the eagles catch flying Canada geese. What a sight!

I was expecting to see tour dates. :D Yes, I love the birds too. Nothing better than eagle watching in Alaska. One of the many highlights of living/working up there.

I live very close to Indianapolis. I was cleaning my garage in the fall, probably October when I heard a murder of crows mobbing something in the backyard. Probably 15 or 20 crows. Being work averse since I retired I happily took a break to see was the fuss was all about. They had moved to a tree about 20 yards into my back yard. I walked toward the tree and expected a squirrel or something stole the crows roadkill or something. As I walked up to the tree, probably 10 yards away from me, was a beautiful eagle tearing shreds of meat off something. I just stood there and did not move, the eagle looked at me unconcerned and continued to eat. The crows were really going crazy and finally the eagle took off, swooped low into my backyard which is downhill so at one point I was actually looking down at the eagle, then it gained altitude and flew away. Amazing bird. Oh, and the crows got the scraps and I had to finish cleaning out my garage.

There are several nesting pairs in the Cuyahoga National Park. We used to see them when we lived near there and hiked in the park. We have moved to Ashtabula County, Ohio and have seen numerous Bad Eagles. Not enough water on our property for them to do more than fly over.

Still awesome to see them!

Kevin

Bald Eagles are so cool. We head down to the Conowingo Dam on the Susquehanna River just across the PA/MD border a couple of times a year to watch them. Exelon has an area just below the dam perfect for viewing, and when the eagles are active it is packed with photographers, birdwatchers and families hoping to catch a shot of one of the beautiful birds snatching up a fish. Best time is when there is a dam release, they say the water rushing through the sluices stuns and disorients the fish, making them easy pickings for the eagles. Winter is good as well, as the eagles migrate south from colder climes.

Here are a couple of links (of many when searching Google):

There is also a Facebook page for those inclined.

Another interesting eagle story of note is the Stellars Sea Eagle that has taken up residence in Maine. Native to Northeast Asia, how did it end up in Maine? This is a BIG bird with a wicked beak. Wingspan up to 8 feet!

Many years ago I accompanied a pair of research biologists making a survey in Florida Bay. They took blood samples and measurements from a pair of Bald Eagle chicks and we visited several more nests. Each nest was ringed by a different food source. One nest had Diamondback terrapin shells, one had saltwater catfish carcasses and one had another type of fish.
Another many years ago I was driving south of Steamboat Springs, Colorado in the dead of winter and saw a pair of Golden Eagles on a carcass off the road. Twenty minutes later I saw a Bald Eagle perched next to a river bottom.
A majestic bird, no matter what Ben Franklin thought of them.

We have two or three nesting pairs in our area. At least one is about 10 minutes from my house-they've been in that nest for about 8 years and are well-documented as long-term breeders. They've hatched every year they've been in that nest and i think at last count they've had about 20-24 chicks. Most of them have lived and been quite healthy. Life is good for those eagles.

Two of Mrs. prairieviper's eagle photos. The first one was on a nest that we had been scouting out. The second photo is an eagle feeding on a coyote carcass. We were travelling on a rural road and saw it out in a farm field. Mrs. Viper always has a camera with her, so we were able to pull over and get a few shots before it flew away.

Mrs. prairieviper is into nature photography and the photos are displayed with her permission. I'm just her driver and caddy for her photography equipment. I'm happy to be of service. :D
