Why is he deeply concerned? Isn't everyone nodding in approval of everything he says... what could go wrong?
 
CDC head honcho says restricting travel between the U.S. and West Africa would likely "backfire" and put Americans more at risk of contracting Ebola.

So.... If you wish to keep Ebola out of the America, the smart thing to do is fly every day hundreds of people from Ebola ravaged areas of the world into America. Epidemiology at its finest.

There are procedures for donning and doffing PPE that are pretty clear. The problem is that people like to take short cuts. We'd run into that during HazMat drills. People would take short cuts, but swear that they would follow the procedures during a "real" situation. Of course, you perform as you practice.

Which seems to be a problem at Dallas Presbyterian.

The Boston case is interesting, but it's too early to say what it really is.

I'm in favor of travel restrictions from west Africa. It's really a prudent move. I'll stop there because any further and I might tread into political territory.

I was in training to be in the medical field and had to take blood readings from a TB patient. I was 100 percent aware of everything going on and what I was doing. I did not get TB but I saw lots of careless people in different roles who were just as careless. Remember a C- doctor is called a doctor just like an A+ student.
 
I'm starting to wonder what the rest of the world is doing. Other country's preventative measures don't seem to be getting much attention from the televised talking heads. Surely the USA is not the only country that West Africans travel to and from. I'll agree that we should be mostly concerned with the homeland at this time, but unless we're a deliberate target from which all others have been effectively isolated, then there may be things that we could learn from others.

Duncan traveled through Belgium prior entering the US. I have family there. I'm not panicking yet, but I am starting to pay attention. This whole thing does reek of having been mishandled, behaviors which are still in progress. -S2

There is a certain category of person for whom cause and effect is... fuzzy. They seem to believe that their desires drive the effects more than their actions. The scary part is when these people are put in decision making positions.

What scares me is the possibility of the ebola virus mutating into something more easily transmitted.

South Africa and neighboring countries have their borders closed to anyone from Liberia, Sierra Leone, or Guinea. They allow heir own citizens to return from these countries, in some cases into quarantine.

During the outbreak in Nigeria, Nigerians traveling to China were greeted by Chinese authorities in biohazard suits who took their temperature and in some cases sprayed them with disinfectant.

Watch to see what the Russians opt to do. Putin cares about his people.

And with every newly infected person the virus has a new biological laboratory in which to make many millions (billions?) of copies of itself, any one of which might contains a transcription error that makes it more virulent or more resistant to treatment or able to survive longer outside a host.
The movie Contagion was on the other night and despite movies like that and Outbreak being largely fictional they should be required viewing for anyone making decisions regarding infectious diseases, especially deadly diseases with little or no effective treatment options.

Just occurred to me that here is a potentially huge market for infrared temperature sensors such as one that can be attached to a cell phone, allowing people to detect when others approaching have a fever at a great enough distance to avoid any close contact.

I seem to recall all the doom-mongers saying the same about AIDS 30 years ago. I'm not holding my breath for either.
 
I hate to say this I guess...After watching the head of CDC talk about Ebola I am sure we know not enough to be the worlds doctor....Until we know for sure, the borders should be closed, or closely monitored (as if that is remotely possible) I heard him say the latest nurse to get ebola from a patient was to blame.....Yet she wore all the garb......He was so ungenerous that it made me sick of him real quick. What has happened to this great country????? Now 76 I have seen great and wonderful advances in all kinds of scientific endeavors, now we seem to be no better than our partners in this world of ours....If I see Susan Rice one more time preaching to the citizens of this once wonderful country, I think I'll just trow up......I know a rant....ISIS, Ebola, Russian incursions into Europe,mad man in some African country terrorizing young girls and killing their families..We wonder why European countries won't help...Not hard to understand!.
 
Long time ago I heard the phrase.....(I'm here from the government to help you) forgot who said it and exactly why.....Has it ever been more a line of **** than now...I can't remember if it has.....
 
To me this is just more evidence of biblical prophecy of the end times being fulfilled. It`s all in place. Wars, rumor of wars, PLAGUES (Ebola), a no money system, (the 666 thing), increase of knowledge, (computers), the mid east wanting to wipe Israel off the map, Christians being killed etc.

i HOPE YOU ARE WRONG...not the prophecy, just the timing. I have grand kids and even a great grandson I would hope he could grow to maturity...Maybe things could get better, I sure hope so......I'll admit don't look good right now.....I know one thing we can't or should just sand by and let the inevitable happen .....As the Mid East goes I'm afraid so does the rest of us. I just watched again the movie Khartoum ...Gorden was a smart guy and he saw the Mahdi revolution coming and no body listened. It was proved he the Mahdi was a false prophet...Let us pray the animals now called ISIS are the same and get their just results......I just don't know who is going to met out their demise.
 
I'm flabbergasted when the "experts" say that ebola can only be transmitted by direct contact with contaminated human matter, and that it's not airborne. Folks, even an idiot can see the fallacy in this misstatement.

Check this scenario. An ebola victim, knowingly or unknowingly, is standing next to you.

And he or she sneezes. Do you know how far bodily fluids are ejected from a sneeze? No, I don't either. But one thing I DO know is that the disease is now AIRBORNE. To claim that's not possible is pure ********.

George, there are several other interpretations that many follow. Like pre tribulation, post tribulation etc. I want to believe the pre trib explanation. (But really dont know). That way the christian wouldn't die for the thousand year millennium but would stay here and rule.. Sounds too good to me! Hope I do live to see it but 74 years is coming up for me and I ain`t the poster boy for fitness. There is suppose to be 7 terrible years (The tribulation). Maybe this might be the precursor to those seven? No one knows for sure until we are there. Many thought it was imminent in 1948 when Israel was formed. I dont claim to understand all this it`s above my pay grade and I do wonder about the ones that do claim to know it all. I just have faith and actually I dont worry but do wonder about it.

From the 10-13 NY Post: Dr. Nancy Sniderman, medical correspondent for NBC, returned from the infected area with her team and promised health officials she and her team would voluntarily quarantine themselves for 21 days. She was just seen at a restaurant in NJ, I believe, picking up an order... Arrogance and recklessness!

On CBS radio 10-13: Dr. Thomas Combs, ER physician in MN, said this has been mishandled from the start by the United Nations. He said quarantining and other measures should have begun in Africa BEFORE anyone could have flown out.

UPDATE 5:30 Pacific time: NBC Nightly News published a written apology by Dr. Snyderman in light of the quarantine errors committed by "her team." She neglected to mention that she was the person who committed those errors. Now the 21-day quarantine is mandated, not voluntary as before.

Technically, it is not airborne. People are misunderstanding "airborne" in a medical context. Ebola particles can not live suspended in the air on their own and travel by wind for miles. Thus in that context it is not airborne. I do not know how much ebola is contained in mucus, but it would rely on the mucus being airborne and containing the virus. It is semantics, but the CDC is technically accurate in saying the spread is not airborne.

Prayers sent......She was courageous enough to try and help and do her job...Burns me up to see that egg-head try to blame her for her own sickness......Every combat corpsman that gets killed or wounded according to the egg-head is at fault...I think not...God bless her for trying to do what she was trained to do...Render help.....

This nurse is NOT what I was expecting to see. But she is consistent with neighbors in her "M Streets" area of residence who were on TV during a cleanup operation on local TV. Those living outside the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex probably didn't see that footage. That area is popular with young professionals like nurses and teachers. It has many restaurants and shops used by the younger party set.

If you do live in Dallas, she lived near lower Greenville and one of the M streets, like Morningside, Malcolm, etc. This is also not far from Central Expressway, and she almost surely shopped at grocers that I use. And in other nearby stores. This is very disturbing to me. This is at least several miles from the hospital and the other apt. complex, where Duncan stayed. The demographics are different, but shopping districts overlap. I hope that neither used the barber/stylist that I do.

I was expecting incompetence in another spectrum of nurses. Maybe this one got careless because she's pretty and happy and just didn't think it could happen to her. Or, she may have been exposed by someone else's carelessness. They're not saying.

I am continuing to pray for her and for all who have been exposed. But reckless carelessness like that by NBC's Dr. Nancy Snyderman should be legally addressed in New York City, and NBC needs to be fined or otherwise chastised for sending her to Liberia and failing to control her actions on return. They should have KNOWN that this was fraught with danger.

Note the dog in the photo. It has been mentioned a lot. Apparently, they're trying to save it. I doubt that anyone even knows whether mutts can carry such viruses. At the least, the dog should be quarantined.

I'm going to make some phone calls to see if I can learn how long the virus can live outside a person. I'm worried about grocery carts, shelves or cans in shops, etc. that may have been touched or sneezed on by either of these Ebola patients or those around them. And that seems likely to exceed a hundred or more people by now.

Just so I can be vigilant, what other "spectrum of nurses" should I watch out for . . . ?
 
I just talked with two major network TV stations, to see if they have a hotline desk to answer Ebola questions. Neither has, but both reps were very nice and agreed to pass my questions to their reporters, who are all in the field at this time. The Channel 11 (CBS) rep said that their reporters do call in to ask which issues the public has called about.

And both channels agreed that my questions would have great interest for viewers.

If I hear more, I'll post it here.
