* * Ebola Discussion

"I'm going to guess that you probably have had little to do with federal employees. While most are competent, there are a significant number that a political hacks who have as their highest priority protecting their pensions. That doesn't even count the political appointees who put ideology ahead of doing their job."

The rank and file are often very competent and hard working. Most, if not all, supervisory staff above the line level are chosen for "other reasons". If you doubt me, ask any hetero, white male in Federal Service who is not a political appointee.

I believe you because the same dynamic holds true at the state and local level. I won't drift off topic by mentioning why I was bypassed for promotion.

I'll also guess that you haven't had much contact with modern academia or it's products. "Credentialed, not educated" could be their motto.

As someone else notes, the President just appointed an "Ebola Czar" to oversee the efforts to contain the disease. Note that he's not a doctor, he's a lawyer and long time political hack. The President's primary concern is to contain and manage the news cycle, not the disease. At least until after the November mid terms.

So much for the concern and competence of our so called federal leadership.

You guess pretty good, I haven't been to a college since I was a young man. I made a living building highways working for contractors in the private sector. No way would they have put up with this much incompetence. I saw many a supervisor sent down the road for not being on the ball.

I guess I am living in the past when people cared about the quality of their work.

Now CNN is flaming the story of a lab technician from Dallas Presby who took a cruise vacation. She boarded in Galveston Texas. The ship is now not being allowed to dock in Belize. It has been three weeks w/o symptoms, if I heard correctly.

Fox isn't any better in this regard. They really seem to be missing the story that people that LIVED with Duncan and had no protective gear, have been symptom free. The lab tech doesn't seem to have had direct contact with him, she handled a lab specimen. Much lower risk, I'd think.

That's because the ones that disagreed with him tended to die of acute lead poisoning.

History would state that Hitlers greatest mistake was the invasion of Russia. No .... it was surrounding himself with yes men that knew only to say "Yes sir"
This has more to do with things today than education.

Duncan was the first BIOTERRORIST.

He's not even close, by several hundred years. Smallpox was used against Native Americans in colonial days. Before that, it was used, even if accidentally, in Medieval times.

Anthrax was used after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, although no one has been identified or prosecuted. An elderly woman in CT died because she handled an Anthrax laced envelope in her mail box. Anthrax was mailed to a TV news studio somewhere in the south National Enquirer Office in Florida and one person died. I think a couple of US Senators offices received letters with Anthrax as well.

At various times infected, dead animals have been dumped in wells to poison water supplies during battles.

I'm sure that there are more examples, but those are the ones that come to mind off the top of my head.

First let me say that our education system is supposed to be second to none so why is it with all these smart people running the show do we have infected nurses flying or taking cruises? The center for disease control can not be that *******g dumb. Even the average person can see it is wrong so tell me why it is happening?

PLEASE show where the nurse on the cruise has anything! And the hysteria continues

The idea that were going to isolate EVERYONE who has any part of patient treatment is going to make for complete lack of any expert staff. Kindly remember the Atlanta hospital had no problems

First off they can't teach everything from a book, secondly they can't teach common sense and third sometimes people are so smart they're stupid.
I think that just about sums it up! ;)

presby was good for two transmissions to its staff, one hopped a flight to Akron with a fever after another coworker was a full blown case ....
Theres some irresponsible behavior involved here.
I wouldn't file it under hysteria as much as an unwillingness to underestimate their established track record for bonehead plays.

A portion of the parking lot at the Pentagon has been secured after a woman who had recently been to Africa began to vomit.

Dallas Pres aside, it's mostly hysteria. A friend of mine who has been an ED nurse for a long time and a paramedic before that, likens this to the mid 1980s AIDS hysteria. Two nurses at his hospital have stated their refusal to treat potential Ebola patients.

Again I'll note that people who lived with Duncan, presumably without PPE, have not become symptomatic as of yet.

I'm going out to dinner with a friend and his girlfriend tonight. I'll be careful not to drink excessively because I don't want to end up in isolation in case I throw up.

"infected nurses flying or taking cruises"
Person on cruise is "self isolating" has shown no symptoms, cleared of any symptoms by ships doctor, may or MAYNOT have had contact with blood specimen but to up the hysteria becomes "infected nurse" thats a big jump and makes it seem it's spreading .....

which in the case of the cruise princess ... no she is probably NOT infected.
but that don't change the fact that Belize won't let that boat dock because she boarded the ship on an empty head.

If a facility like Dallas can't handle Ebola, how many across the country are able to? The capacity to properly handle Ebola seems a lot more limited today than it did two weeks ago.
