EDC Ammo?

Just bought some Federal Guard Dog 105 today. Going to the range to test it tomorrow.

Don't carry a 9mm any more but used to carry the Speer GD 124gr. +P as it seemed to do well in gel test and on the street.

Back when I still carried a G19, my choice was Winchester RA9T. When I sold the Glock and got a M36, it was Remington Express LSWCHP. Nowadays, it's Speer GDSB.

Speer GD 124 gr. +P and the aforementioned Ranger-T are my personal all-time favorites in 9mm.

I too use the RA9T in my carry 9mm. ( Excellent ammo that I would (if I had to) stake my life on.

What are you carrying for ammo? Looking for ideas and trying to find the "best bullet" for my 9mm. I carry two mags, one in my gun is Federal 147 Hydra-Shok and my backup mag is FMJ 115 home reload.

I have used and carried Federal 147 HST in my carry 9mm in the past. It is very good reliable SD ammo. However, the first and most important part of the carry equation is practice, so that if ( god forbid) you should ever have to use your firearm to defend yourself, you put the bullet where it will do the most damage. Other wise, what you are carrying for SD ammo is a moot point.

I have nothing but praise for this particular round and found it to be exceptionally accurate out of a BHP and a G19. The recoil is very managable, as well. It's definitely not your father's Olin Super Match. ;)

Over the years, I've come across some anecdotal reports that the heavier Ranger-T bullet is velocity sensitive, but I would have no reservations launching one from a service length barrel.

I recently bought a new Glock mod 43, the new single stack 9mm that
is probably going to become my standard EDC. The barrel is 3.39" in
length and as someone stated above there is significant velocity loss
with the short barrel. After chronographing a variety of loads from my
existing stash of 9mm ammo I decided to load the 43 with the Federal
XM9001 115 gr JHPs. This is described as a Government Contract load
without any pressure rating but seems to be about +P level. It chronos
1260 fps out of my Browning HP and 1175 fps from the 43. Seems
like a pretty good load considering the limitations of the short barrel.

According to some videos I've seen, you have to be careful with "Duty" ammo. The theory is that it is designed to work in a full sized firearm with a longer barrel which gives greater velocity and better performance at that velocity. If you put it in an M&P 9C or a Sheild it will not perform as well because it doesn't have the same velocity out of a three inch barrel. If I'm not mistaken it may overpenetrate due to poor expansion.

It all depends on the caliber and length of you gun barrel. Some ammo may expand perfectly but in doing so you loose penetration

Big wheel mentioned AMMOQUEST, He does a nice job of reviewing ammo for the 380 and 9mm Uses FBI protocol.

I'm odd man out: 442 or Model 38 = Remington 158 Gr. +P HP (FBI load) or M&P .380 = HPR 90 grain HP.

I had hot 115gr JHP and then went to +P 124gr Quality bullets
for my short barrel 9mm's for better expansion.

Then this year I was finally able to get some +P 147 HST's
for my 3 & 3.5" barrels. Wanted "Standard" but, still happy.

The 115gr FMJ, as others have mentioned is great for killing paper but has the ability to over penetrate, which is not a good thing, in a home with other family members.

Barrel length over/under 4" depends a lot on the ammo you choose.
Good hunting.

Ammo Quest best result so far is the Federal 124 gr HST (9mm)
It is calibrated Ballistic gel, layers of denim, not stupid milk jugs or wet newspaper.;)
Perfect penetration and expansion using FBI protocol

I no longer own any 9's but the fellas that I know and respect say it's real hard to beat the Speer Gold Dots and the HST's.

Again, bullet performance depends on what gun you are shooting. A bullet (velocity) will depend on the barrel length. This changes all the expansion and penetration results.

So one that works well out of a full size "duty" gun may not be the same out of a shorter barrel carry type gun.

I do not pay that much attention to it all, as to me, shot is shot!;)

I don't carry, but for HD I really like the old school Federal Hi-Shok, 115 gr. HP. It feeds very reliably in all of my guns. I also like the the Federal .38+P, 129 gr. HP. I use it in all of my modern revolvers.
