Ive lived on an acreage for over 20 years but recently built a new house on a half acre lot and was wondering about buying an electric riding mower. I never had a whole lot of problems with my previous gasoline mowers but I thought electric might be a little less hassle and being quiet and not dripping gas or oil on the concrete might be nice. We're currently paying a guy to mow, edge, weed eat, and blow the yard for $70 which is a pretty darn good deal for this area but I've always enjoyed cutting the lawn though the August heat is not too much fun. Any one have some experience with electric riding mowers?

I have no personal experience but it sounds like you're a perfect candidate .

Last year we went with an electric mower and edger/weedeater . Smartest thing we ever did . I like that it's light , so there's no ruts in the lawn , looks like a putting green . We have a good sized lawn , and with the 2 batteries it does the job .

Ryobi came out with an electric rider a couple years ago. Home Depot had them. They--Ryobi--are already abandoning it. That should tell you something. Take your chances with one.

I've gone all electric with my lawn-caring devices but mower isn't a rider. If EGO made a rider I might be tempted, but not for this yard. Keep the $70 per visit lawn guy's number. That seems to be the going rate for my 'hood.
If you get a good one please let us know, as we plan to get out of the city and I may need one...or a goat.

Have old Ryobi 48v riding mower, 480e IIRC. The original batteries were AGM lead acid so if you went below 50% charge while mowing, they'd fail quickly. Original batteries lasted several seasons mowing 1.5 acres but then got to the point where one of the 4 12v AGM had a bad cell and runtime suffered.

Fortunately, there's a fix, which is to replace the AGM batteries with a single 48v 100aH LiPo battery with Bluetooth. Originally was a 75aH so upgraded there, incredible runtime, BMS keeps everything healthy and no problems running down to 20% without damage. Only downside is that it needs to come inside or put in basement for the winter. Also 100 pounds lighter or more.

There is a video out there of a brand new Dewalt rider that was the hottest thing at the garden show

2 yrs ago I got an EGO weed wacker. It has a high low setting. Low has plenty of power for normal weekly trimming but sometimes it won’t quite do all I need to do before dyeing. I do like the fact that it’s quiet and replacing line is easiest I’ve I’ve owned. But like so many electric machines the range isn’t there.

EGO makes good products and I believe their ZT is at the top of the ratings.

I have an EGO leaf blower.
Good enough for the walking path, porch, and driveway maintenance.

Always did my own maintenance when I had 2.3 acres of oaks and maples with my Deere rider and Little Wonder leaf blower. Gazillion leaves.
A 200 foot driveway needed plowing with my Ariens snow blower. All that got real old my last few years before moving.

Now I have .4 acres, plenty enough, and a landscaper who does everything, I just pay him. Any snow, can’t remember how many years it’s been, just melts in a day.

No more fuel storage, oil changes, blade sharpening, etc
Life is grand.

I'm 74 and have had 4 left foot surgeries over the past 3 years and up until that time always did all the mowing and trimming. No longer able to do it, we hired a local fella who had his own lawn care business. He has been doing our half acre now every other week & does a great job, for $100. Sold my rider, trimmer and power mower , and now have more room in my garage and less hassle . Works for us .

When I was diagnosed with cardiac issues almost 8 years ago, I gave up mowing my lawn even though it was a small lot. Somehow I got referred to a guy who lived up the street from my late aunt and uncle who had a lawn mowing business on the side, and he has been doing my lawn ever since. Two of my neighbors saw him at my place and ended up up hiring him for their lawns. So for three seasons he does my lawn and in the winter he clears my snow. Good deals all the way around for me.
