Riding mower question

Another vote for Snapper. I have mowed 3/4 acre for six years. No problems. New blades and a battery along with oil changes and air filters have been the only expenses.

Looks like Snapper is the favorite so far. I appreciate all the advice. It gives me a good starting point.

You know Sip, I've thought about that for a long time. Unfortunately, any neighborhood kids would want a lot more than a ten spot. I remember back when we would go around town and rake leaves, mow yards, shovel snow, etc for a couple bucks. It was a way to earn money for that new bike. Nowadays it's impossible to find kids who do that sort of thing. My neighbor is an elderly (about my age ;)) heavy-set woman. She used to have a neighbor mow her lawn. But she now does it herself. I have this fear that one day I'm going to look out and see her laying dead behind her lawn mower. She told me the neighbor wanted $25 a week to mow her lawn, which is smaller than mine, even if he didn't have to mow it that week. I figure if I can get a rider, it wouldn't take but a few extra minutes and maybe $1 worth of gas to mow hers when I mow mine.

Es posible - un hombre de Mexico???

I found a used John Deere with an auto trans for $500 this year. There is a mower repair guy in town and he referred me to the owner. I hope I never have to buy another one.

Good used mowers in your price range are out there.
I sold the biggest Husqvarna tractor type mower Lowes had for $1000 after one year of me using it to mow my yard and before I went zero turn.
Before that I gave my Snapper to a neighbor and it was still running.
The yard looked the same after mowing with any of them but I just needed something faster.

If you get a used Snapper, be sure to have the tranny checked really good. Don't ask me how I know that. The rest of the machine was bullet proof.

Misty, you should be able to find a used one for well under a grand. I bought a new one a while back that was a brand I'd never heard of from a big-box dept. store for well under that.
I'm really fortunate now (Warning shameless brag coming):D-A few years ago my Wife discovered, after she retired, that it's really fun to ride the mower around our four acres. As a result I haven't done so since. She bought a new John Deere (what else, we're Iowans) about two years ago. The other day I went out and saw it sitting in the back yard. I also heard a mower. I look WAAAYYY back and see her mowing......with a new John Deere!!! HHHMMMMMM??? I wander back with a confused look on my face, pointing to her ride and the one by the house. She shuts it down and says "Oh, yeah, I bought another one". I guess now she needs TWO??!!! It's a good thing I love that Woman.

I second (third?) trying the local momer shop. They might have a nice used machine or know of one. You will also have someone to goto if you need service. Another thing is getting it home, they are big and heavy. The local shop can probably drop it off at your house.

Another place to look is folks having a moving sale.

When we moved into the house I am in now I picked up a used Honda rider for $300. I think it was 11hp, it looked like the snapper more or less.

I gave up doing the lawn as I can get it done for $40 and it saves me half a day. If I work six days a week, its money well spent!

I wound up selling the Honda and got $300, used it for three years. Put new blades on it and sold it for what I paid, cant ask for more than that.

27145,

We had a guy near here LONG AGO, DWI in pick-up truck, released and shortly later stopped on a State Route on his lawn tractor mower headed back to the bar.

The same individual, who is now deceased, road his horse up to town and into a bar very near the courthouse one day.

Same individual was under arrest and sentenced to do his time at the firehouse sleeping quarters area due to overcrowding at the jail. The gong went off and he slid down the pole and onto the exiting firetruck. When the sheriff recaptured him and told him that was actually a JAIL BREAK he explained that he figured those boys could use some help at the fire.

Some of the many things he did back then would easily get you GLOCKED today, as he was know to assault LEO's at at any given time.

Another vote for a Snapper, and durned if it ain't good to see you posting again.:)

Thank you Iggy. It's good to BE posting again! I figured out that doing the things I enjoy can be good medicine!

If she doesn't give you any grief about gun collecting I think you should just look up, say thank you to the head honcho, and figure she's entitled. How many guns have you bought that cost more than the mower?

Check your local mower shops. I did and have picked up a Simplicity with a six month warranty from the shop owner.
He takes trade-ins and goes over them and sell the best used if you don't want new. He also advised me what to look for and I said I wanted to check the big box stores - he kinda chuckled and said "go ahead - but the same list I gave you applies to them. Let me know what you find out". I was back the next day and bought the used Simplicity. He then told me warranty or not - if it breaks I'll fix it - as long as it's not from abuse. That was 8 years ago and it still doing the job just fine.
