Generally the smaller hole (9mm, 38super firing pin) is the desired size. Even with .45.

Are you sure you have the right firing pin?

I have a brand new slide and want to put in new Ed Brown, Hardcore .090 pin diameter firing pin with a power spring..

Then contact Ed Brown and ask them.

After years of gunsmithing I also can see no benefit to using a larger than standard diameter firing pin in any gun.

I took it to a gunsmith who is well known for his custom 1911's. The answer was real simple.

You fit the firing pin to the slide by turning down the firing pin..

I bet he tossed a 9mm firing pin in there.....

Besides.. you lose the mass turnin it down.. now your back to a 9mm pin anyway. I'd have charged you more then the pin cost, to cut the one you had to fit the hole..

Order an extra long #43 drill (.089 diameter)

The drill will follow the existing hole so it will be still on location. Polish the new pin so it just slides in. Drill it from the rear using a drill press. Align the slide using a reamer or another drill.
