I will do new recoil spring. That is one of those cheap parts that gets expensive if you have to pay shipping on it, so will have to see what else I can combine it with.

Good idea. I always replace the common springs before testing a "new to me" pistol.

Buy the recoil spring from Wolff Springs & they include a firing pin spring with it.

I also like to replace the mainspring & put new magazine springs in to start fresh with also.

Magazine followers are still available at Midway. Better get some while the gettin's good.

Why start shooting it with unknown longevity parts in it & have issues that make you frustrated with your new toy?

Grips? I'm perfectly happy with a new set of rubber Hogues.

I found this old thread on the recall of the Gen 3 grips: 3rd gen recall - Grips problem? (Solved)

So I looked at mine:



No dimple, looks like I'm in for some free grips from S&W! It's Christmas! I am going to ask Santa for the curved backstrap version. I hope he doesn't ask if I've been a good boy.

There are a couple of marks visible on the front of the magwell. One looks like a crescent moon and the other an L. Sort of like proof marks. Anyone know what tthey are?

Update on Grips

S&W customer service was closed over the holidays so I called them today. The lady that answered the phone said she hadn't heard of a recall on grips. I chuckled and said it was a looooooong time ago. I gave her the model and serial number, she looked it up, checked stock on hand, and said, Yep, happy to send you new grips. Asked if I preferred straight or curved backstrap. Altogether very pleasant to deal with, and I have new set of curved grips on the way! Really impressive customer servce on a 35 y.o. gun where I am not the original buyer.

As advised by many, I ordered Wolff recoil springs in original weight (18 pounds), plus 20 and 22 pound extra strength as well as mag springs. Once I get a few more rounds through it, I think I will get it bead blasted to get it looking like new. Loving my new toy!

I have both the Model 1006 and the P220 Match Elite. The 1006 is a 9+1 load-out and weighs less than Sig's railed 10mm.

Years ago, as a homage to Crockett's Bren Ten on M.V., I sent the slide to Tripp Research for hard-chroming. Turned out great. Obligatory pic attached.

I read on this forum about using Scotch Brite pads to lessen scratches and did so with my 6906. Took out some really deep ones. Also, I almost took off, the writing on the side, "Warning-Capable of being fired with the magazine removed". (oops)
I am happy enough with it, but what I want to tell you is that I also used the pads on the grips. It worked pretty good! They were so scratched I figured, "What harm?"

Are you planning to carry this? Concealed? Open carry?
What ammo for EDC?
I am being sassy, forgive me. I remember you are in California and best hopes for the future of 2nd A liberties in that state!

LOL. Not planning on carrying the 1006. Believe it or not, I have a CCW permit, even in CA. You have to list yoru carry guns on it, three max. I have a Sig p239 SAS in .40, a CS9 in (suprise!) 9mm and a Hellcat OSP in 9mm. All of them a lot lighter than the 1006. I'm afraid if I tried to carry the 1006, I'd look like a gangsta, with my waistband down around my knees. I'd be printing big time, probably slow down the draw, and Id have to hold my pants up with one hand in order to walk. Not how I like to roll.

While the 1006s are definitely heavier than modern polymer & aluminum compact frame SD carry pistols they are essentially no heavier than a legacy 1911.

My Colt Mk.IV, Series 70, Govt. Model 1911, 45 ACP, weighs 41oz with an empty magazine inserted.

My 1006 weighs 42.5oz with an empty magazine inserted.

I'd like to have a pistol just like yours. I own a couple of third gens and I love them, but I'm not in the position to buy guns for a while, if ever.

I wanted a 5906 but I saw a 5903 that I could afford. It had some scratches where somebody had tried to remove the takedown pin with a big nail or something. Tish-Tosh. I bought it and I'm extremely happy with it. I've said before and I'll say it again. I'm predominately a shooter. I don't care about looks. I just like to keep the guns that look good looking good. Many of them, though, I bought used and accepted some 'character' in the interest of being able to afford them.

It's not so bad being unable to expand my collection. I've got plenty of whatever I want to shoot. Revolvers, semi pistols, bolt rifles, SA rifles, lever action, pistol caliber carbines semi and pump shotguns, so, I ain't hurtin' or complainin' about anything to shoot.

I agree. A 1006, unloaded or loaded 9+1, is really no worse in a holster than a stock, unrailed 5" 1911.

Now, I can tell you my 10mm P220 with its heavy railed frame, loaded 8+1, weighs in at just a smidge under 51oz. That's beast heavy.

Welcome to the club! 1xx6 S&W are some of my favorites. Have an example of each, 1046 withstanding.

Last acquisition was a 1086 found by a list member and passed on for me to grab. Has the fabled Rosewood grips which are nice and chunky.

I seriously do not ever recall having a malfunction on any of them, even with some reloads that caused hiccups in other platforms. Very sturdy, very heavy but very reliable.

OK, maybe I slightly exagerated how hard it would be to carry the 1006. It's still larger than I like to tote around.

I don't see this as a disadvantage. The weight of it makes 10mm easy to shoot. I was looking for big 10mm that was all metal, and the 1006 delivers.

I have read similar experiences on this forum. I htink it jsut depends on who answers the phone. When I caleld, they had to check stock first, but then came back on the line and said they did have them and I had choice of straight of curved backstrap. That was just this week.

If I were you, I would call back and hope someone different answers the phone.

Frank, thanks for your input. Sure wish you had spoken up before I ordered them. I actually asked about this in my first post:

My experience with 1006 wood grips...

Those KSD grips are definitely pretty though.

When I bought my used 1006 it had wooden Hogues on it.

It was REALLY HARD to get the slide off & back on again when I inspected it before I agreed to buy it. I thought it might be a fitting issue with the pistol's internals & decided to buy it in spite of that.

Short story, it turned out that the Hogue wooden grips were causing the whole problem. Without the wooden grips installed the slide was easily removed & installed.

When you disassemble/assemble the slide on the frame the ejector lever has to be pushed down fully, which forces the draw bar rearward past the edge of the grip frame.

The wooden grips internally were not trimmed enough to let it freely & fully move, so the bar barely went back enough (& the lever down enough), causing the slide to drag on the lever, rather than moving smoothly & causing the problem.

Whoever installed them obviously never tried to remove the slide afterwards.

Moral of the story: Check for proper clearance between the grips & the mechanics of the pistol.

BlueDot, thanks for the tips. I am kind of resigned the idea that I might have to do some fitting.

I just love the look of wood grips, especially on a range toy / safe queen like this. I really don't forsee any "job" for this gun to fill, I just bought it cuz I wanted it. I hope the wood on these is not too dark, the light wood, stainless steel look is a great combination.
