Every day for this entire year I will post a old school printed gun advertisement.

Nov 1962

These are from Nov. 1962 Guns & Ammo. What a great issue! I had to stop to read a couple articles:
-30 carbine pistol build, on a Remington rolling block action
-Col. Townsend Whelen's sporting rifle collection

1) Browning. I believe these were built on FN Belgian Mauser actions.
2) Ruger. Nice pair, Super Blackhawk & .44 carbine
3) Weatherby. .300 Weatherby!
4) FN-FAL. This ad is all business. So is the rifle!
5) Marlin. classic 336

I wanted a Feather Industries SAR-180, but never ran across one to buy, probably a good thing. The Cult of the Colt is not an ad, but the opening to an article. At the time I had just gone through the USMC Combat Pistols Instructors Course, Jeff Cooper had helped to design it, also was into shooting IPSC at the time. Very good article. Finally bought a Sig P220, but in .22 LR. Had a Poly Tech M-14/S, did some mods to it and it was a great rifle.

All I can really say is I hope everyone is enjoying what we are doing and I think they do with 19,400 views as of this posting

We're a TV society. Used to being entertained without offering any feedback.

This should probably be in the Notable Thread Index. In fact, I'm going to go nominate it.

1980s milsurp renaissance

I remember MooMoo's latest batch vividly.
That HK ad was especially enthralling. Coincidentally, I was just watching "Swamp Thing", the 1980s action-horror (comedy?) with the lovely Adrienne Barbeau. Sure enough, all the tough guy baddies were armed with HK 91s.

From the same era, I wonder how many remember the momentous event that opened to floodgates to military surplus imports in 1984? The senate was negotiating a trade bill to set new quotas on auto part importation from Japan, a very touchy subject at the time. Sen. Bob Dole tacked on a rider removing all barriers to the importation of all military surplus, non-automatic firearms made before 1945. It passed and suddenly the U.S. firearms market radically changed almost overnight.
These ads are from the Guns & Ammo Surplus special edition from 1987. There are only three ads in the whole magazine! For the Navy Arms ad I'm including the whole ad and a close-up.
The price comparison table is not an ad, but is useful to see.
Oh, does anybody else remember that goofy "Learn Gun Repair (at home)" ad?

Just for fun, here's the trailer for Swamp Thing (filmed right here, entirely in South Carolina!)
See if you can spot the HK!

The gunsmith by mail place is literally down the street from where I work. I drive by it every day.

It was the International Correspondence School for years (ICS), now it's called Education Direct.

Thank you for the kind words I am sure all that have contributed would like that very much

Awesome! More mouth watering glossy pics. Especially like the Remington ad for the 742 with the later basket weave checkering and deep bluing. Sure notice we are in a more "utilitarian" age today in present gun ads. Gone to often are the glossy bluing and the beautiful walnut stocks we often drool over. Very often back then under $200 bought one heck of a gun!

For many (myself included) "Blued Steel and Wood" are much prettier than plastic.

1964

OK, sorry for jumping around, but I stumbled on this unexpectedly.
From Guns & Ammo March 1964
1) Some enticing Lugers and Mausers from Western Military Arms Corp! The prices shown were not insubstantial for the time, and some of these were clearly refinished and/or parts guns. Still, there's some nice stuff here!
2) Close up of same
3) Not an ad, but an interesting glimpse back on the era.
4) Awesome Ruger ad from the back cover.
And, from the Shooting Times reloading special edition from 1967:
5) If you have a nice wife and three sweet daughters that are happy to help out with the reloading, then you truly have it made!

Best part of viewing these ads is checking out the prices!! $87.50 for a Blackhawk plus those Luger prices! We all need a Time Machine.

Remington ammunition ads from various years. The years are included in the pictures titles.

Have a look at the chart in my post #426. It's a table of sample gun prices adjusted for inflation, specifically from the 1960s to the 1980s. At least at that time, salaries were moving concurrent to inflation.
It would be interesting to update that table to today's inflation. Then, factor in wage stagnation, not to mention growing tax burden....
