"A Fin" is actually a clan motto from my Scots ancestry, established in the 14th century. Latin for "To the End". And it's confusing, which I think is one of the best aspects of using it as my signature!

Part of mine goes back to childhood. I have very curly hair, so the nickname "Curly". Over the years this got shortened to Curl. Friends call me by that nickname now.

The other part dates to the early 1980s. Back then I had a 19 ft. Larson V-hull with an Evinrude 140. It was a lot of fun on a local lake. One of my lifelong friends who often accompanied me on the boat hung me with the moniker, Capt. Curl.

When I made my very first online debut with AOL in the late 1980s I chose CptCurl, and it has been that way ever since.

So I was the captain of a second-hand runabout motorboat and nothing more.

I parted company with the boat in 1990 when I split with my first wife. Since shortly after that event I have been known only as Curl or Curly. I'm now the captain of nothing more sporty than a collection of canoes.
