I got my hands on an unfluted cylinder and wanted to make this fit for my 640-2. Unfortunately it is only the cylinder and the extractor, still wrapped in S&W wax paper, which is the old style extractor with the channel notch in the stem and the two extractor pins in the cylinder face.

Since the 640-2 has the longer extractor rod with the flat spot for the 2 1/4 barrel, the old style rods used for 60s won't fit since the threading is different between the extractors with the notch and the flat ones that don't have the pins in the cylinder.
I checked at Numrich but they don't seem to specify the extractor rod length or make any difference for J frame models in regard to possible barrel length. Do you know at what barrel length Smith used a longer rod like used for the newer models with 2 1/4 barrels or was there never a longer rod for the 3 inch barreled versions? Or is there a compatible rod and extractor version from a different J Frame that has a longer rod but also the two pin style extractor?

If you have to get the longest possible rod, trim it to the length you need and a machinist can put knurling on the tip.

There are multiple difference between older J frame cylinders and the new ones. I am in the process of making a model 36 into a 327 mag using a newer J frame 32 H&R cylinder and it is a pain

The main issue I have is to find a longer rod. All what I can find is the usual snubbie length for 2”. I’m already contemplating to by another cylinder from Every Gun Part but right now there isn’t any available.
Anybody know how Numrich’s customer service number is? Do they even take calls and answer questions? I only ordered online, so no experience with that.
