Favorite bullet for the Casull

I've been loading the Hornady 250 gr HP/XTP over 25 grains of 2400 for years. This has been both my elk and mulie load. To date it's accounted for 4 bulls, 2 cows and 10 or 11 mulie bucks. The revolver is the Freedom Arms model 83 field grade with 7 1/2 inch barrel.

The last 5 years I've rifle hunted browns and caribou in Alaska. This year I'm thinking of going after a brownie with my Casull. I know I'll want a heavy cast bullet.

What's your preferred brown bear/griz bullet and powder combination for your 454 Casull?

When I bought mine, I opted for a Lyman mould, provided by Casull, for a 260g GCTC.

I load this over 34g W296 for an honest 1850fps chrono'd @ 3' from the muzzle of the 7.5" barrel.

That ought to do it.

I don't have any personal brown/grizzly hunting experience, but for absolute bullet integrity, you might want to take a look at the Belt Mountain Punch Bullet. Kelye at Belt Mountain proably has some load info.

I've used a few of the LBT designs available from Cast Performance, the 325's seem to work well on deer and elk. My FA has only fired a handful of J bullets IMHO the big bore sixguns are perfectly suited to LEAD.

You have a tremendous amount of handgun hunting experience under your belt. I've taken several deer and a few elk...all with cast slugs.

I shoot a 380gr WLNGC from Beartooth bullets out of my Freedom Arms 454. My favorite load is 25grs of 296. If I remember correctly it's travelling about 1300fps out of my 4 3/4" barrel. Gives me a common hold to 100yds.
I guide Brown Bear hunters in Alaska, managed to kill 21 bears so far. Never shot one with the Casull. I'm sure it would work fine.
My favorite backup rifle is a .450 Alaskan built on a pre-war deluxe model 71 Winchester. The old Dr. I bought it from said he killed a polar bear and a brownie with it. I've added six more brownies to the tally. It shoots a 400gr Kodiak bonded bullet 2100fps, which works excellent. I also shoot Beartooth 425gr WLNGC"s from this rifle at 2100 fps. Beartooth makes GOOD bullets. I've used them to kill elk, deer and black bears with the .450, deer with the 454 and deer and elk with a 44 mag and 280 grn WFNGC's at 1300fps.
People who should know have told me the 454 won't stabilize bullets heavier than 360grs. Accuracy is fine with mine, 3-4" groups at 100 yds, but I can't say they will track as straight inside the animal.

If you have a friend or Penn bullets has them,,
heavy flatnose cast
The best For Me is the SSK style in 340 to 360.
Gust remember that the use of heavt cast bullets
in a 454 is to keep the speeds down so the
lead can handle the strain and that FA 454,
and some others, have short cylinders ans the bullet nose will also be short.
