Hands down the venerable 45 Colt. I'm primarily a hangun hunter (Skeeter Skelton, Elmer Keith, and Bob Milek screwed me up at a young age.) This cartridge is the 30-06 of handgun rounds, it shoots practically anything you choose to feed it with excellent accuracy, from mild to full throttle. In a strong revolver like a Ruger Blackhawk it will leave a 44 Mag hanging it's head in shame. Don't get me wrong, the first centerfire hangun I ever owned is a Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 I've had since 1976, and it's been the demise countless deer, coyotes, and small game. But my nearly as old Blackhawk 45LC can be handloaded to levels, mild or wild, the 44 mag can't match.
