We have a locally owned chain...

We have a locally owned 'chain' (maybe 5 stores) around here called 'Ye Old Fashioned Ice Cream Shop' and besides a plethora of ice cream flavors they make some great sandwiches, dogs, hamburgers, soup, chicken, etc. and old fashioned French Fries (yum). I get a Reuben sandwich almost every time I go.

Yum Yum Better Ice Cream and Hot Dogs, Greensboro, NC.
Family run for 110 years, still making ice cream on equipment bought generations ago. Creamy, buttery, and delicious!

Kimball Farms, Westford, Massachusetts. Family owned since the ice age, 4 generations of my family have enjoyed the best ice cream on planet earth. Their secret; serve more ice cream portions than humans can possibly eat in one sitting, and charge a moderate price.
Their cookies and cream flavor should be illegal, it's just that good.

About 45 miles south of here is the Tillamook Cheese Factory. The place has gotten huge since I was little, and is a fun place to visit. They make not only the world's greatest cheddar cheese, but also the world's greatest ice cream. If I was to go somewhere just to eat ice cream, that would be it!

...and then there's mine. Both my favorite Ice Cream Parlor, and MY Ice Cream Parlor. Central Mexico. San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato. It's name is Helados Santa Clara, which is a Mexican franchise of quite expensive, 100% natural Ice Cream. And it's always summer outside that front door.

We have A/C, which is not all that common around here but it is becoming more so. It helps on the hot days when you want to sit and enjoy your Ice Cream, milkshake, frappe, or whatever...

Very clean, nice decor and the store has been there in the same spot since 1990 although I've only owned it for 23 years. Two of the girls have been there for 25 years though. One of them makes just the best milkshakes on Earth, in my not-so-humble opinion and many customers agree. She puts a touch of grenadine in each shake.

And of course, you can have a real Coke. Not the post-1985 Coke Classic but the "Real Thing", the original 1950's formula that Coca Cola Mexico still makes in the refillable glass bottles. You'd be amazed at how much of this we sell -- people buy it often just to take the bottles back (and yes, they have to pay the deposit on the bottles, just like when you were a kid). We go through crates of the stuff.

Mine is my own. I own it, I run it, and it's always summer. You can't beat that. Let me expand this post with some photos in a minute or two, I need to switch computers.

I was just going to nominate that one in SMdeA, ...

and I ain't talking about La Michoacana.;)

In Phoenix, the absolute top place to go was Mary Coyle's Ice Cream. It was a family business, started in the 1950s on Thomas Road just east of 15th Avenue. I went to high school with one of the Coyle boys. When their lease expired and was not renewed, they moved to 7th Avenue, just above Missouri. They made their ice cream from scratch, and it was unbeatable.

Eventually, it closed, much to the regret of a lot of people in Phoenix. I took a picture of their place just before they closed, for old time's sake. Times change. Stuff happens.

Graeter's uses the "French Pot" method. Each pot produces only 2 1/2 gallons. The ice cream is served directly from the pot.

It is expensive so we have it as a rare treat.

PS, Oprah (I know) said their Black Raspberry Chip was her favorite and they opened 5 new parlors to meet the demand.
They are always crowded.

I lived in Laveen and had my office just a few blocks from the original "Mary Coyle's". Ice cream freak that I am, I'm sure that MC's put a few pounds on me in that 5 years. ........ My mouth is watering just thinking about that place and the Root Beer Freezes. ............

Local shop up the road had the best ice cream and a leather shop next door. It was the best and was Sabo's ice cream and had been around for years and a couple generations or more. They closed winters and one spring a couple years ago had a sign up saying thanks but we won't be open this year. They haven't been open since.

I will say some of the best ice cream I ever had was as a kid when we made our own in a hand cranked ice cream maker. I think all that cranking my brother and I took turns at and anticipation was part of what made it taste so good. Bad part was for all that effort and time the bucket was small and didn't go too far in a family of five and no seconds either.
